Made by a Fabricista: A Versatile Cotton 2 Piece Set!

 Happy Saturday LOVES!

I am finally feeling less overwhelmed and adjusting to this distance teaching.  I am back in full swing for the new 2020-2021 academic school year and even though we encountered challenges the first week, I am happy to have survived the first 3 weeks.  As we plan to transition to brick and mortar (in person) in a few weeks, I am praying that our students and teachers remain safe. 2020 year has allowed  me to learn, reflect, grow and overcome many fears and challenges and be open to change.

This month’s make had me in deep reflection about my sewing journey and how much I have grown over the past 3 years.  I am no longer scared of taking risks, speaking my truth and being my authentic self.  If you have been reading my blog posts for a while, I am pretty sure you have seen the growth as well.  Fabricmart has allowed me each month to remain consistent in my journey and next month I celebrate my 3 year blog anniversary with Fabricmart.

Now let’s get into this set!  I have been eyeing this cotton fabric for a while and waited until it went on sale to request it.  I absolutely fell in love with the direction of the print, the color and the fact that I can rock it with so many of  my previous Fabricmart makes.  The original plan was to make a maxi shirt dress but knew I would not get the most out of my look.  After feeling the texture and weight of the cotton fabric, I knew I had to make yet another set or faux jumpsuit.  This fabric feels like satin, drapes like rayon and is soft like cotton.  Unfortunately, it is sold out but FabricMart has a wide selection of cotton here.

The Top!

For the top, I opted to use Simplicity 8891 View C that I had in my pattern stash for over a year.  I so wanted to make this classic kimono style top that was work appropriate and possibly rock to dinner as well with these jeans I made for my Fabricista Challenge (the winning jeans here). Now that  I am finally comfortable with button holes, this quick and easy make was right up my alley.

This top has 4 pin tucks in the waist area in the back and 4 in the front (2 on each pattern piece) which makes it easy to pattern match.  The back is not cut on fold which adds to the shaping of the top. When working with prints and stripes, be sure to select a pattern that will showcase its beauty and will be less headache to pattern match.   I did change up the direction of the print (horizontally) for the top and cut across grain to create a great look.

The Super WIDE Leg Pants!

I absolutely love the Vogue 1708 jumpsuit pattern pants and yes, it is my new favorite.  I made the shorts last month (a yellow set here) and the fit is amazing.  I opted to just make my signature wide leg pants as I am transitioning my makes for fall.  This pattern fits a curvy girl right out of the pattern envelope and the adjustments I made for the shorts were NOT needed for the pants.  I absolutely love the drape and the fit.

Why Sets?

Call me the Queen of sets, separates, or faux jumpsuit but I absolutely enjoy making it!  I truly love to mix and match my clothing and get the most wear. I made this solid linen set two years ago here and this new set will surely be mixed with it.

I have made quite a few sets this year here, here and here and I definitely plan to make at least one more set before the end of the year. Want to make an amazing sets? Be sure to check out the linen, suiting or even the challis section and grab at least 5 to 6 yards of solid or neutral so that you can definitely mix and match your makes.

Thank you so much for reading and please feel free to check out my Instagram page to see how I mix and match my sets.  Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog HERE to receive all the latest updates of my recent makes.

One Love,

Sewing With Intention: New Look 6106 and a More Coordinated Wardrobe

Sometimes a sewing project begins with a beautiful piece of fabric or a pattern you just have to make. This one began with my closet. Recently, I did a major closet purge. I took a good look at what I actually wear, what I kept reaching for, and—maybe more importantly—what was missing. Once the pieces I no longer loved or wore were gone, something became very clear: I want to be more intentional about what I sew next. Instead of sewing individual pieces that I love but don't necessarily wear together, I want to build a wardrobe where my handmade garments coordinate with the clothes I already own—and with the pieces I'm planning to sew next. For this month's Fabricista project, this beautiful lightweight shirting from Fabric Mart turned out to be a wonderful place to start. The Fabric That Started It All Fabric Mart provided this beautiful oatmeal and black heathered shirting , along with the matching thread for my project. One of the things I love most about this fabric is ...

Meeting Endless Summer Energy with a Maxi Dress

How are the temps still so hot?! I’m trying to make the best out of a blazing situation with a gorgeous swishy dress made in a splendid graphic print in an attempt to keep my cool when I am very much not. The heat persists, but so do I (while wearing sundresses)!  I really wanted a full length, all-fancy-design-details-included version of the new Chalk & Notch Noe Tank Dress since testing the pattern. This is View C. This version features a beautiful open back with a tie closure and the long gathered hem for maximum impact.  I chose the higher of two necklines. The pattern features full lining and I used the same fabric for both. I prefer to avoid any peeking-issues the easy way.  As I was scrolling through the challis options on the Fabric Mart site, this one stood out immediately, a beautiful kelly green with big abstract swipes of aqua. Simple, bold, (non-directional!), all of my favorite characteristics necessary for a showstopping dress. I wanted something very ...

The Perfect Plan for this Linen Blend! Until I Changed My Mind.

Hello Sewing Friends!  It’s Sharon from Sharon Sews with another Fabricista make.  When I saw this linen blend designer fabric on the Fabric Mart Fabrics website, I was intrigued.  After all, I, like many of you, love to find designer fabrics at an affordable price. It is a linen/nylon/rayon/Lycra blend, and I wondered what the designer had created with the fabric as I wasn’t familiar with that combination of fibers.  Surprisingly, I discovered a sleeveless, lined, mid-length vest in the same color with an almost identical fabric composition. Perfect! I’ve been wanting to sew a longer vest with matching pants, and that discovery confirmed this fabric would work beautifully for the look I had in mind.  The vest I’m wearing, from the June 2026 Burda Style magazine, it is not what I was originally going to make.  You see when I found the designer’s vest, I remembered seeing a Butterick pattern that was almost identical.  I ordered the pattern excited to...

Fall + Flannel = Shacket

If there is one piece that transitions easily between crisp fall mornings, mid-day warmth, and chilly autumn nights, it’s a shacket. Today, I’m excited to share my latest Fabric Mart make: the Ellie and Mac Patterns Connie Casual Shacket, sewn in a dreamy plaid flannel coating fabric . Here’s a glimpse at how it came together, along with a few construction tips for planning your own version! The Ellie and Mac Patterns Connie Casual Shacket pattern offers plenty of options needed to make the perfect transitional top layer for fall. With a relaxed body, oversized sleeves, three lengths, and a curved or straight hem option, you can make your dream shacket a reality.  For this sew, I selected a plaid flannel coating fabric with a soft blend of sage green and cream tones from the Fabric Mart website. Heavyweight flannel is ideal for a shacket because it provides structure and added warmth. As a bonus, this particular fabric is extra soft and snuggly, which I love. In addition to the fa...
