I know it can’t just be me. My sewjo has gone away and I’ve been having such a hard time trying to get it back. I remember the days when I used to sew every single day without fail and now, not so much. I think about sewing and all the things I’d love to make, but I just haven’t found the motivation. I kind of know what the issue is. I started a new job last October and ever since I started, I’ve been sewing less and less and I don’t like it! Well, in comes Simplicity S3237.  Summertime is here and it’s time to bring out all the skirts. Simplicity recently released S3237 as part of their summer patterns. This skirt is a full, gathered skirt with a bias-cut yoke with side seam pockets and an invisible back zipper. The skirt comes in 3 different lengths – mini, midi and maxi.  I decided to make View B which is the midi length. Twirling in a me-made outfit! I live in a small town where the nearest fabric shop is a road trip away, so I almost exclusively shop for fabric online. Having access to an online shop like Fabric Mart with a solid search engine is incredibly helpful. But by far my favorite aspect of Fabric Mart is what I call the “Drape Picture” included in each listing! This picture gives me all the information I need and I find it more helpful than the exact weight per yard/square meter.  Seeing how the fabric falls close or away from the body gives me a clear idea of how it will behave and inspires me to make it into something that will highlight the fabric’s nature.  When I saw the drape of this “Baked Plum” wool suiting , I immediately wanted to immortalize those beautiful folds into a skirt! I opted for a simple self-drafted pleated skirt with a deep hem. I wear my dresses year-round and rely on wool skirts that I layer under or over my dresses for warmth.  Hello Everyone, This was a really fun and straightforward project. I wanted something that could easily fit into my wardrobe and be a piece that I could wear for a long time. I spent the time to do french seams and make sure the fit was exactly what I was looking for. This cotton lawn skirt is inspired by an Edwardian walking skirt and features the same lines. In the future, I will look more into the Keystone manual to get something less cobbled together. But it works for now. I think the other thing that I would change is flat lining the skirt, because in the end, it probably would have been easier. When I saw Fabric Mart’s Muted Midnight Navy Cotton/Lycra Sateen Stretch Denim , I knew it would be perfect for my next project. The color is rich and versatile—a deep navy that works as a neutral but still has presence. The stretch denim has just the right balance: structure with a bit of give, making it great for a garment that needs both shape and comfort. It’s an ideal fabric for fall transitions, but it’s sturdy enough to carry straight into winter with tights and boots. For the pattern, I chose the Bernadette Skirt by Friday Pattern Company . This is one of their newer designs, and I knew immediately I wanted to sew it up. It's after a July fourth, you know what that means? HALLOWEEN! When I checked my stash of patterns for inspiration I found a witch hat pattern and I couldn't resist since I could style and reuse both the hat and skirt for several characters as well as have a new skirt for my wardrobe! I absolutely love making hats, from beginning to end it's so relaxing for me. Once I had my pattern for the witch hat printed out and assembled, I started by reenforcing my main fabric, a Malibu Pink stretch sateen shirting with some interfacing for both the hat and brim. Taking separate interfacing for the internal structure of the brim I stitched wire to both the outer edge of the brim and the middle since I knew this hat would be a bit heavy, I wanted extra support! Once the support layer was done, I covered the underside (where the wire was attached) I added a layer of batting, then attached the caps to their brims for both the exterior and lining, before sandwiching them together.
