Behind The Scenes | Employee Spotlight

We are continuing to recognize all of the wonderful employees that make Fabric Mart so amazing... If you've shopped inside our retail store you've probably have met the person in today's employee spotlight! Everyone say hello to Isabelle!

Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Isabelle. I’m 21 years old. I work in the store at the Fabric Mart.

How long have you worked at Fabric Mart?

I’ve been working at the Fabric Mart for about 2 and a half years.

What are your main responsibilities? What do you do?

My main responsibilities involve working with customers in the retail store. I answer customer questions, help them find things, and check them out when they’re ready to buy something. I also work to keep the store tidy, and I help fulfill online orders when I can.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Fabric Mart?

I enjoy being able to help customers find the right materials for projects that they have planned. I think it’s cool getting to see what people are planning to make, and it’s very satisfying when we’re able to find exactly what they need.

What question are you asked the most?

New customers often ask me how to figure out the prices of fabrics. If you’re shopping in person, most of our fabrics will have a SKU number at the end of the bolt. Looking up the SKU number on our website will bring up information about the fabric, including the price. We have a computer available for customers to use in the store, but customers can also pull up the website on their phones if they prefer, or ask me to look up prices for them.

Do you consider yourself crafty?

I would consider myself crafty. I enjoy drawing and painting a lot and I also sew a little.

Favorite thing to do outside of work? Any hobbies?

Outside of art, I enjoy observing nature and going out on walks, and I like learning about the different plants and animals that I see while walking. I also enjoy playing the game Yu-Gi-Oh as a hobby.

Do you collect anything?

I collect Yu-Gi-Oh cards and Pokemon cards. I also collect art books and manga volumes.

What is a TV show you are currently binging?

I don’t tend to binge shows a lot, but I’m currently watching the anime Dungeon Meshi.

If you could only eat one dish for every meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If I could eat one dish for the rest of my life, it would probably be some form of stew or soup, one with a lot of hearty vegetables. Either that, or curry with rice.

Drop some knowledge… What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Be kind. If you’re nice to others, then they’re more likely to be nice back, and I think it’s just generally easier to be kind than to be actively antagonistic.

Made By A Fabricista: Turning the Page

We had a lovely, warm September in central New Jersey but as of last week, fall has finally started to set in. While I’m no longer operating on a school calendar, I always look forward to the return of fall, the crisp air, the colorful leaves, and the opportunity to “turn over a new leaf.” While exploring the Fabric Mart website, browsing all their gorgeous cottons, I was incredibly inspired by the Eggshell/Black 100% Cotton Horizontal Stripe Weave Lawn . It looks exactly like a lined piece of paper. I thought it would make a fun top for work during this transitional season, one that sparks “blank page” creativity. I wanted to pair the top with a simple yet classic pair of pants, allowing each piece to be a quality addition to my work and loungewear wardrobe, working together and as separates. I picked up the beautiful Midnight Navy/White 100% Tencel Chambray , which has a fun denim-look while being quite soft and flowy. When designing the top, I wanted to play with the stripes. I chos...

Made By A Fabricista: In the Fall, We Make Halter Dresses

Is we too many people?  Am I the only one making halter dresses in the fall? I’m not quite ready to start my fall/winter sewing, so I’ll keep summer going.  My summer was pretty eventful, and I didn’t get to sew much and now I’m trying to do a little catching up.  I’ve had this dress on my mind for a while now and I thought now is as good a time as any to sew it up and I’m so glad I did. For this month’s post, I decided to make the Julia Dress from Viki Sews.  This dress features a semi-fitted bodice with a full gathered skirt and a deep V-shaped back. The dress fastens at the neck and back with ties and of course it has pockets! I love the length of this dress. It’s not too short and it’s not too long, which is usually an issue for me because I’m so short. Based on my body measurements, I purchased a size 52, which is their largest size. Before I made a muslin, I measured the pattern at the waist and realized I needed to add a few inches. This might seem a little in...
