Made by a Fabricista: Weekend Getaway Capsule for $50

Hi everyone! I’m Chelsea, of @thatssewchelsea and I’m excited to share my first Fabric Mart Fabricista makes with you! The inspiration for my post is a sunny resort weekend getaway. A casual, relaxed capsule of resort wear inspired pieces. I’m talking my ideal warm weather weekend getaway – hot and sunny weather, no schedule/agenda, a book by the pool, a cold beverage, and some good food. My capsule has pieces that can be styled several different ways for a weekend of relaxing. The best part? My capsule costs only $50 total, for 9.5 yards of fabric and 3 days’ worth of mix and match outfits. For my fabrics, I shopped the $2/$3/$4 per yard sale at Fabric Mart to get the most bang for my buck. I was determined to stick to my budget, so I waited for the right sale to pop up and got to work on picking my fabrics. I also knew that since I wanted to make pieces for a hot weather/summer getaway, I wanted light and breezy fabrics, which helped narrow down which categories to watch for and shop...

Made by a Fabricista: Spring Style Essentials

Is there anything more versatile for your Spring wardrobe than a T-Shirt Dress and a classic button-up blouse? In this Fabric Mart Fabricista blog, I'm going to show you how these two little wardrobe staples can be rotated through your spring me-made wardrobe for 5 different and fun looks!  I was browsing the Fabric Mart website when this lovely 100% Cotton Parchment/Black Striped Jersey Knit Fabric popped up. I’ve been itching to make a T-Shirt dress with the Rebecca Page T-Shirt Dress pattern ever since the pattern launched back in February. As I continued to browse the Fabric Mart website, I was struck by the most lovely Blossom Pink Silk Shantung Shirting that I knew would be perfect for a Grainline Studios Archer Button-Up ! As the wheels started turning, I realized that the cotton jersey paired with the silk shantung shirting fabric would be a match made in heaven for my me-made wardrobe. So naturally, I had to get both fabrics plus the Archer Button-Up pattern! I was not d...

Made by a Fabricista: Into the Wild Side

Hello, I am so happy to be joining you as a Fabricista!! I absolutely love Fabric Mart’s amazing selection of all of great fabrics with some of the most luxurious fabric you can find at such amazing prices. I fell in love with this Animal Print Twill Blouse Weight Woven (SMA3872) and ordered 3 yards. I was amazed at how quickly my fabric arrived which allowed me to get working right away. I decided to try the new early spring Mimi G x Simplicity pattern S9224. The pattern is asymmetric wrap dress pattern with ties which was a pretty easy pattern to sew. My favorite thing about my order was that I was able to get matching thread to go with my fabric without having to guess through the computer screen. The fabric has a great drape and soft sheen finish even as a twill and would be great for top and dress styles. Also, a good thing to note is that the fabric didn’t fray as easy as expected with most similar fabrics however I did still clean finish my seams with my serger. Then this h...

Made by a Fabricista: Channeling my Inner Coco Chanel

Hi Everyone!  My name is Johanna Ali and I am SEW excited to be a Fabric Mart Fabricista!  I’ve been shopping with Fabric Mart for years and have been wanting to be a Fabricista since then too, so I jumped at the opportunity as soon as they posted it.  So, here I am.  I will be sharing my Chanel Inspired Jacket and how I made my own trim. The classic Chanel Jacket is iconic and sophisticated as it should be with the price tag associated with them. Usually, the classic Chanel Jacket is made using a tweed or a bouclé fabric and are hand sewn.  This is what makes them couture.  Other distinct characteristics are the front pockets, the ornate buttons and trim as well as the chain weighted hem.  The lining is also quilted to the jacket. There are several patterns produced by the big 4 pattern companies that you can use for this make.  Initially, I was going to use Vogue 8804, but I decided to go in a different direction and used Simplicity 8741 instead...

Made by a Fabricista: Use Those Views! Sewing the Grainline Studio Willow Tank

Spring is here! Honestly, I'm still bundled up in sweatshirts most of the time, but the afternoons are getting glorious and warm and just a t-shirt will suffice for a couple of hours in the warmth on some days so I know the overwhelming heat is not far off. I love planning and organizing in all facets of my life, and spring garments for my wardrobe are on my mind. Naturally tanks are at the forefront of my strategizing for comfort in hot weather and I wanted to branch out with a little something new.  Anyone else have patterns that they've been eyeing for ages but haven't pulled the trigger? Who knows why I've kept putting off sewing the Grainline Studio Willow Tank . I've long admired the simple lines and I'm absolutely sure it would fit into my overall style. I've even tried drafting something similar myself with varying degrees of success, but never quite on the nose. A simple tank can go with just about everything from jeans to skirts to a high-waisted a...

Made by a Fabricista: Sewing in Black and White

Hello Fellow Sewists! I am excited to share my very first Fabricista project with you all. As I thought about what I wanted to see for my March project, I started thinking about Spring and Easter. My mind about immediately went to Easter white, so I decided I wanted to make an Easter Sunday worthy look featuring white fabric. As luck has it, I found a beautiful white cotton/rayon blend suiting and an incredibly gorgeous black and white textured bouclé fabric. It was hard tell for sure, but they seemed the whites would match. And to my joy, the fabrics arrived and were a perfect match.  (Look at the texture on this bouclé!) Full disclosure, I struggled a bit to narrow down what exactly I wanted to make with the fabrics. Originally, I planned to make a two piece set (skirt or pants and a top) with the white suiting fabric and then a coordinating trench style coat with the bouclé. However, the white suiting was much heavier than I thought it would be. The quality was unbelievable fran...
