Made By A Fabricista: Neutral Fall Styles

Hello Everyone! Summer is gradually winding down and we are approaching the fall season. I am currently in the process of transitioning my closet from summer to fall. As much I love my bold colors, there’s something refreshing about staple neutrals.

The Fabric.

I selected a rust/brown polyester and rayon blend suiting fabric for this project. I really like the color and texture of the fabric, it’s also very soft and comfortable on the skin. It is medium weight, opaque and a dream to sew/press.



The Pattern.


I chose 2 different patterns for this fabric, a dress (Vogue 1675) and a jumpsuit (McCalls 8203). Both patterns worked for the looks I was going for with the fabric. Vogue 1675 is a fitted dress with right front drape gathered to midriff. McCalls 8203 is a romper/jumpsuit pattern with different bust cup sizes, puff sleeves and round square neckline detail with an option to add ruffles.


The Sewing Process.

The sewing process for both piece required time and attention to details. For the jumpsuit, I raised the shoulder seams by sewing using 1 inch seam allowance instead of 5/8in to accommodate for my short torso. I also cut 4 panels (the pattern requires 3 panels) for a more dramatic effect on the next line. I especially love that the pattern came with different bust cup sizes to get the perfect fit. The dress had some tailoring detail that required lining but I skipped that and drafted a facing for a neat neckline finish. I didn’t really make any fit modifications with the dress and it still turned out great. I love the side front drape, it adds a bit of drama to the dress.



The Styling.

I went for a monochromatic look with the styling by pairing both looks with a pair of brown/nude pumps. The jumpsuit can also be styled casually by pairing it with flat/moccasins or sneakers to run errands or for a casual outing. The dress is perfect for work or even a formal event.

The Perfect Plan for this Linen Blend! Until I Changed My Mind.

Hello Sewing Friends!  It’s Sharon from Sharon Sews with another Fabricista make.  When I saw this linen blend designer fabric on the Fabric Mart Fabrics website, I was intrigued.  After all, I, like many of you, love to find designer fabrics at an affordable price. It is a linen/nylon/rayon/Lycra blend, and I wondered what the designer had created with the fabric as I wasn’t familiar with that combination of fibers.  Surprisingly, I discovered a sleeveless, lined, mid-length vest in the same color with an almost identical fabric composition. Perfect! I’ve been wanting to sew a longer vest with matching pants, and that discovery confirmed this fabric would work beautifully for the look I had in mind.  The vest I’m wearing, from the June 2026 Burda Style magazine, it is not what I was originally going to make.  You see when I found the designer’s vest, I remembered seeing a Butterick pattern that was almost identical.  I ordered the pattern excited to...

Sewing With Intention: New Look 6106 and a More Coordinated Wardrobe

Sometimes a sewing project begins with a beautiful piece of fabric or a pattern you just have to make. This one began with my closet. Recently, I did a major closet purge. I took a good look at what I actually wear, what I kept reaching for, and—maybe more importantly—what was missing. Once the pieces I no longer loved or wore were gone, something became very clear: I want to be more intentional about what I sew next. Fall + Flannel = Shacket
