Made by a Fabricista: Cherry Blossom Fran Pajamas

Hi everyone, this is Byrd with my latest Fabricista make! I’m excited to share my Fran Pajamas from Closet Core, sewn in a stunning Fabric Mart 100% cotton poplin shirting. The fabric features a navy, cherry pink, and scarlet cherry blossom print, making it the perfect blend of cozy and stylish.

The Pattern: Closet Core Fran Pajamas

The Fran Pajamas pattern is a classic two-piece pajama set, featuring:

    •    A long-sleeve button-up top with a shirt collar, button placket, and split hem with facings

    •    Relaxed-fit pants with an elastic waistband, drawstring, and pockets

What I love most about this pattern is that it doesn’t have to be just sleepwear! With the right styling, the top could be a chic button-up, and the pants work well as breezy spring/summer bottoms.

My Design Choices: Color Blocking & Custom Touches

To give my set some unique flair, I added color pop accents to key areas of the shirt:

Underside of the collar and cuffs

Button placket facing

Pocket details

Split hem facing

These accents were actually fabric scraps from my stash, making this a great scrap-busting project! I also considered adding piping for extra detail, but since I didn’t have any on hand, I created a folded fabric accent instead.

Another fun element? Embroidery! I used this project as an opportunity to experiment with my new Pfaff Creative 350 sewing machine. Zoom in to check out the embroidery details on the underside of the collar and cuffs—a subtle but elegant detail! This took a little time but it was so worth it.

The Fit & Adjustments

For reference, my measurements are:

    •    Bust: 44”

    •    Waist: 42”

    •    Hips: 49”

I cut a size XL for the top and graded to a 1X at the hips. The pattern has plenty of ease, and I probably could have sized down for the pants. After cutting a 1X in the pants, I made a few adjustments:

    •    Shortened the rise in both the front and back

    •    Took in about an inch on the side seams for a more tailored fit

Overall, I love the relaxed yet stylish silhouette!

The Fabric: A Dreamy Poplin Shirting

This Fabric Mart 100% cotton poplin is a dream to sew and wear. It’s lightweight yet structured, making it perfect for pajamas, button-ups, or even a casual dress.

A few tips:

✔ Prewash & dry your fabric—since it’s 100% cotton, it will shrink slightly

✔ The navy and pink floral print is vibrant and eye-catching—I love how the pink pops against the deep blue background

✔ It’s super soft, making it perfect for lounging but polished enough for a daytime outfit

I can already picture myself enjoying lazy mornings with a cup of coffee in this set!

This project was such a joy to sew, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out! Whether worn together or as separates, this set is versatile, stylish, and oh-so-comfortable.

Made By A Fabricista: Turning the Page

We had a lovely, warm September in central New Jersey but as of last week, fall has finally started to set in. While I’m no longer operating on a school calendar, I always look forward to the return of fall, the crisp air, the colorful leaves, and the opportunity to “turn over a new leaf.” While exploring the Fabric Mart website, browsing all their gorgeous cottons, I was incredibly inspired by the Eggshell/Black 100% Cotton Horizontal Stripe Weave Lawn . It looks exactly like a lined piece of paper. I thought it would make a fun top for work during this transitional season, one that sparks “blank page” creativity. I wanted to pair the top with a simple yet classic pair of pants, allowing each piece to be a quality addition to my work and loungewear wardrobe, working together and as separates. I picked up the beautiful Midnight Navy/White 100% Tencel Chambray , which has a fun denim-look while being quite soft and flowy. When designing the top, I wanted to play with the stripes. I chos...

Made By A Fabricista: Getting Ready for Fall with a Pinafore

Hooray, the best season has finally arrived again! I don’t know about you, but I spend all summer sweaty and wishing for cooler weather despite my massive appreciation for sundresses. I prefer a chill in the air, a breeze rustling my skirt, and layered garments for coziness!  Would you believe I have never sewn a wrap pinafore dress in all my hundreds of garments? It’s shocking, I know. I’ve had one on my mind for at least a year or two, but narrowing down the final pattern wasn’t easy. In the end, I chose the Fibre Mood Khloe Pinafore because I really like the straight, high neckline and the finishes at the wrapped bodice.  So here we are, combining the best of all possible worlds, a wrap pinafore that is utterly magnificent for summer, BUT adding a long sleeved layer underneath to take it seamlessly right into autumn.  On the dress, my only change was to widen the shoulder straps by doubling their width for better bra concealment when I wear it alone. I do wish I’d adde...
