Dory

Dory used a 2009 Simplicity 2550 pattern inspired by Project Runway to make her linen dress. The fabric is 100% linen with a slight slubbing. It was a gem to work with, plus having the tropical Floral and birds on the linen made me feel like I was with “nature" while sewing on it! This was my first time sewing with Linen and I absolutely loved it. I want more of it! Even though it says dry clean only, I did cold water wash it and dried it on low. It turned out just fine.

The dress has a 22” back zipper, a tab on the neckline to give it shape. I added 5” to the hemline to make it the longer length. The sleeves have a nice detail with cuffs. There are fish eye darts on both the bodice and skirt, front and back.

Fall will soon be here! Cool refreshing days with the glorious colors of nature.

My make reflects the colors of fall in Simplicity 8874, a dress made from a double brushed floral print knit. 60” wide with a stretch of 70% salvage to salvage and a 30% stretch long wise. The fabric is light weight falling moderately close to the body, perfect for a top, dress, or skirt. A gentle wash is all that is needed to maintain this fabric. The dress has a jewel neckline with short sleeves, darts in the bodice and elastic waist, and a skirt with pockets. A comfortable wear.

I needed to add a black jacket to my wardrobe. The fabric is a cotton polyester blend with a diagonal jacquard weave of medium weight. It is soft and opaque with no stretch and falls moderately away from the body. I loved finding out that it was an RTA (Road To Awe) a luxury women’s and men’s ready to wear fabric out of Los Angeles. A fantastic fabric to work with and made a fantastic jacket. I used Butterick 6382 with 3/4” set in sleeves, fish eye darts front and back, and fully lined. An easier make than I thought it would be. This is sure to be a wardrobe staple. Perfect for fall weather. It laundered wonderfully.

Sewing a coat is not for the faint of heart, or for the sewist looking for a light project. It is possibly the slowest form of apparel sewing that exists. If you’ve made a coat, chances are, you know what I mean. No matter what you do, you can’t rush through it, you can’t skip steps or cut corners, you just have to roll with the punches. One minute you’re flying through assembly thinking “I’ll be finished soon,” and the next you’re running away from your sewing room because you need space. Are you guaranteed to end up with a bespoke wonder in your coat closet, most definitely! But heed my warning, if you are looking for a quick win, it is not a coat! Made By A Fabricista: Surgery, a pattern hack, and a hemming tip.

Hello sewing friends! I’m here on the blog today sharing a pattern hack I recently did to boost my wardrobe with a few pieces to wear during my recovery from surgery…and I’m also sharing a tip for those pesky rounded hems. So let’s jump in! I recently had surgery on my neck due to issues with my parathyroid glands. All went to plan and I’m doing well, but I have to admit, the scar was a bit larger and more prominent than I expected. I definitely want to cover it up a bit during the healing process, and I realized that I own very few tops that cover that area of my neck. I don’t really love wearing high neck tops, so I came up with the idea to sew a top that I could convert back to my preferred style once I recover.
