Made by a Fabricista: The Night and Day Dresses!

My black dress, made with some Milly floral taffeta Hi everybody, I just love wearing dresses during summertime! For this month's post I was supposed to post only one project, but finally decided to play with two gorgeous fabrics Fabric Mart has currently in stock. Here am I with 2 looks created from the same pattern: one dress for night time and one dress for daytime!

Made by a Fabricista: A Trio of Blue Shirts!

Liesl + co Classic Shirt in navy blue linen Hi everybody, blue is one of my favorite colours and I love all shades of blue - from pale sky blue to midnight blue and everything in between. For this month's post I was inspired by some blue fabrics on FM's website, and I made 3 shirts out of them! I've been wanting to try the Classic Shirt by Liesl + co since its release, so I grabbed some designer quality blue linen and gave it a try.

Made by a Fabricista: Made for Mom

This month's post features a special person, my mom! Everyone says we are twins. We don't see it but we've heard it enough that we just accept it. However, we do concede that we share some of the same mannerisms, traits and tastes. Fashion is one thing we typically agree on, so I'm pretty sure that I'll be dressing like her in another 30 years. As soon as I saw Vogue 1550 I thought of my mom. It just screamed MOM! She had recently shared that she needed a few outfits for a summer trip and I knew this look would be perfect for her.  I am typically a pretty selfish sewer but this summer I've set aside some time to sew for my immediate family. I have to say I really love Vogue's Summer 2017 patterns as proven by the fact this is the third one I've sewn up (See V9259  and  V1546 ). The recommended fabric is linen which happens to be one of her favorites so using Fabric Mart's Designer Quality Linen was a no-brainer. The only question...

Made by a Fabricista: Designer Quality Linen Outfit

Have you noticed the beautiful linen fabrics on Fabric Mart's site? You can see them here:  Designer Quality Linen . So many colors! I chose this beautiful royal blue and royal it is!     These aren't your average linens.  They have some nice drape and the colors are so vibrant!                                                                         Since this season seems to be all about the sleeve and athleisure style pants, I made one of each style. Here are the patterns I used:  The top is the Sadie Tunic by StyleArc .   The pants are Jalie Patterns, Vanessa Flud Pants . Both are really awesome patterns but honestly, this is a lot of blue! I probably won't wear them together.   They are both very comfortable and will make ...

Made By A Fabricista: Saved by Completion!

When I was composing this blog post in my head, the title was certainly going to include "wadder".  I tried it on mid construction, decided it was okay if a little on the bright(!) side, but when I finished it, I put it on and was so disappointed in the results. My son came down at the moment I was trying it on and asked if it was a nightgown! It wasn't until I removed the 1st temporary drawstring - white satin ribbon, pressed it, added a different temporary drawstring in pink grosgrain (haha!) and accessorized that I felt a huge sigh of relief that I actually like it! I still think the bright pink linen + this pattern had the potential to turn into an unfortunate result from the start. Too hospital gown-y. I will remake this pattern in a print (went perusing the cotton lawn & voile sections!), but this one was just barely saved. I wanted to try out the reorderable linen as it isn't a fiber I sew it with very often. In fact, I think I've only made 2...

Made by A Fabricista: Artsy Linen Top

As temperatures rise, and festivals are planned, in comes plenty opportunities for wearing something a little "different".  The fabric I used is a medium weight linen from Fabric Mart that is currently sold out, but  will be restocked soon ( HERE ). I drafted this top on my dress form after seeing a slightly different inspiration on instagram.   The bodice was drafted with side and shoulder draping.  The side draping is 12 inches by the measurements from center front to center back.  The shoulder was 5 inches by the length of  a decent drape from the should seam and back to the shoulder seam.  There are 3 straps for each shoulder.  The second and third straps are shorter in length by 2 inches. The side drapes were cut 2 pieces for each side and sewn together along the longest side with the ends free.  I then presses the pleats. I cut 2 of every bodice piece and lined the bodice with it self.  I decided to ...

Made by a Fabricista: Ocean Blue Linen Dress. (Also, I Match the Lisette Pattern, Again.)

Remember last year when I made the light mint green top/brown linen pants combo?   Remember how I matched the cover art for the Butterick 6183?   Well, I did it again.  I guess I really must aspire to be the cover art for Lisette, as this is the second (accidental) time I have made a garment that pretty much exactly looks like the cover of a Lisette for Butterick pattern.  LOL. Clearly there is a difference or two from the original and my version, but they do look darn close.  All in all this was a satisfying make, and since making it over a month ago, I have worn it three times, so it is a satisfying wear, as well. When faced with my make for the month of April, I knew two things, I wanted to make it in a bright solid color and I wanted a project that I could get done before leaving for Spain in late March so I could wear it on my trip.  The colors I had chosen for my travel wardrobe were teal/aqua blue, black, and grey ( you can see many of m...

Made by a Fabricista: Neutral Linen Separates

I've always been attracted to the linen separates in neutral shades that Eileen Fisher sells. They seem timeless, elegant, but with an edge. They are also beyond my budget at well over $100 a piece. So, when Fabric Mart came out with their new line of designer quality linen I knew exactly what I wanted to make- neutral separates that I could mix and match with my current wardrobe. I'm really more of a print person- it's rare that I choose a solid color fabric because there are just so many beautiful prints to choose from! But, I've realized for a while that I need some more solids, especially neutral solids in my wardrobe. For these pieces, I chose the brown-olive shade for the pants, natural for the top, and black for the jacket- all from the Designer Linen line. The brown-olive is really a fantastic color- just perfectly in between brown and olive, so it will go with just about everything.  The natural is what I would describe as cool toned- which is ...
