Made By A Fabricista: Dreamy Florals | A DIY Dress Inspired by Son de Flor's Spring Collection

Hi everyone! When I saw this floral print linen/cotton blend make it’s way onto the to-be-described table I knew I had to make a dress from it.

I’d been staring dreamily at all the dresses from the brand Son de Flor who had just put out their spring collection and thought, maybe I can throw together something inspired by them! I grabbed three yards of that floral shirting and a yard of SWC5682w to line the bodice with. I used Simplicity’s S8946 for its simple bodice block. This pattern has a gathered rectangle for the skirt, but I’m a sucker for a circle skirt so that’s where I decided to start. I folded the fabric twice and cut out the longest circle the fabric would allow.

Then got to work on the bodice, sewing up the darts and attaching everything. Now, I don’t love installing zippers. I ha d a lot of trouble getting them to sit right, and no matter how much mental gymnastics I do when first pinning one side is always put in the wrong way. So while I did have to unpick and redo one side, this is the best looking invisible zip I’ve put in to date!

It’s very far from perfect, the waist seam is ever so slightly off and the tape shows more where I finagled sewing around the pull, but it’s growth and I’m very proud of it!

Kind of boring. I grabbed Simplicity S8695 and used the poofy bell shaped upper sleeve from view A and elasticated the bottom.

Much better. After hand sewing the lining in and throwing a hem on her, she’s done!

We had a lovely, warm September in central New Jersey but as of last week, fall has finally started to set in. It looks exactly like a lined piece of paper. I thought it would make a fun top for work during this transitional season, one that sparks “blank page” creativity. I wanted to pair the top with a simple yet classic pair of pants, allowing each piece to be a quality addition to my work and loungewear wardrobe, working together and as separates. Made By A Fabricista: In the Fall, We Make Halter Dresses

Is we too many people? Am I the only one making halter dresses in the fall? I’m not quite ready to start my fall/winter sewing, so I’ll keep summer going. My summer was pretty eventful, and I didn’t get to sew much and now I’m trying to do a little catching up. I’ve had this dress on my mind for a while now and I thought now is as good a time as any to sew it up and I’m so glad I did. For this month’s post, I decided to make the Julia Dress from Viki Sews. This dress features a semi-fitted bodice with a full gathered skirt and a deep V-shaped back. The dress fastens at the neck and back with ties and of course it has pockets! I love the length of this dress. It’s not too short and it’s not too long, which is usually an issue for me because I’m so short.
