At Fabric Mart: Cutting and Shipping

Meet your friends who pull each fabric by hand, carefully cut and fold your choices and then ship off your package to greet you at your door step. They are the cutters. The cutters play a huge role in the Fabric Mart team. After everyone has prepared the fabric for you to view, the cutters make your dreams a reality. There is a lot of work that goes into cutting and shipping the orders. They often have a lot of details to remember to make sure everything is sent out the correct way. Fabric Mart has a team of 5 full-time and part-time cutters to make it all possible.

Christine is the right hand to the cutting room. She hand pulls each individual item on the orders and lines them up behind the cutters which helps us process the most orders in a day. This job will make you work up a sweat! She also helps run the store.

Sandy is a full-time cutter. She pays close attention to the quality of the fabric we send out to make sure you receive a clean and wonderful piece each time. Sandy also answers a lot of questions over the phone about content, washing instructions, uses, etc.

Katie is not only an order processor from the online store, she also assists Julie and is one of the bloggers for the Fabric Mart blog. She seeks out guest bloggers and fans to feature and keeps the posts organized. So, you might see her working upstairs, downstairs, the store, or even at a show. You just never know!

Amy puts the party into part-time cutter. She has a great personality and brings a shot of energy to the cutting room. She helps us process your online orders in the morning so we can get the orders out the door and to you in a short amount of time.

How long have you worked here?
Christine: One month
Sandy: around 20 years. (Holy crow!)

Amy: 4 months

Describe a typical day at Fabric Mart:
Christine: Running around gathering fabric for orders.
Sandy: I cut and ship the online orders as well as answer customer questions.
Katie: I generally process orders from the web or help in the store. I also help Julie send out wholesale samples, contact customers, and get ready for the shows. But that's not all! I write posts for the blog, contact guest bloggers, and try to keep it all organized.

Amy: I gather invoices and cut fabric to the length the customer has asked for. I then label it, package it, and mail it out to the customer.

What do you do when you leave work?
Christine: Spend time with family and my two English Springer Spaniels.
Sandy: go home! I cook dinner, take care of house work and family and get to see my grandchildren. Oh and sew when I get the chance!.

Katie: I go home and work on sewing and blogging for my own business. I'm always working on something! Every now and then I take a break to spend time with friends, family, the boyfriend, and even some cows.

Amy: I am a fitness instructor at a local gym.

How do you take your coffee?
Christine: A little sugar.
Sandy: Hot.
Katie: I am all about frappes and mochas!
Amy: Cream & Sugar.

What is the best part about your job?
Christine: That everyone is friendly
Sandy: My co-workers. I work with nice people.

Katie: I love being around the fabric and blogging for you!

Amy: The people at Fabric Mart are wonderful. The management is very flexible with my hours.

What is your favorite fabric?
Christine: Silk, cotton, and fleece
Sandy: Cotton and Lycra.

Katie: I am currently loving the rayon knits!
Amy: Cotton, I like that it breathes.

Kowloon Generic Romance is a sci-fi, romance & mystery manga series. It was later adapted to a TV anime and live action film! This series takes place in Kowloon Walled City. It’s about a woman named Reiko Kujirai who suffers from memory loss and doesn't remember her past. She works at a realty estate management company with her co-worker Hajime Kudou, a very easy going and brash man who’s also her crush! Reiko lives her life in Kowloon, while also trying to discover who she is, and the mysteries of this city (I will not spoil everything! You’re going to have to check it out for yourself!). Return to work wardrobe in ITY – which is your favorite?

In June of this year, after spending nearly 11 years at my place of employment and after restructuring and cost cutting, I took a separation package. I was so fortunate to be able to take a few months off, and also to very quickly find a position with a new company. I start my new job on September 14th and I’m super excited! This new position is also different for me in that it is local to my area (whereas before I worked remotely and traveled to the office every few weeks) – so I’ll be going into the office three times a week. Have you ever used a fabric that you loved so much you had to buy more and make it again. I can only think of a handful of times that I’ve done that as I am very much a use it all for one project type of person. However after I first used this snakeskin print stretch twill I knew I needed more of it. It started off when I decided to make this dress for my upcoming high school reunion. I loved the fabric even more in person. When I was playing around with the dress I envisioned making pants with it as well in the future. I was able to order some matching thread and zippers to complete my dress look. Then I ordered 5 more yards to give myself a second look. I love to use Pinterest to help me gather my ideas. In the end I came up with this lace up detailed look. I wanted a slightly rockstar inspired look but still something I could keep in rotation in my wardrobe. Foray into Shirtmaking

I love playing with volume and texture! I've always loved well-made shirts: the soft yet crisp fabric, the structure and tailored fit. I love the deceptive simplicity that tries to conceal the precision and details that go into their construction…everything about well-made shirts is fascinating. And despite my interest, I somehow never really owned one. Let’s change that! I took my time with the finishing touches. I decided to bury my nose in a couple of David Page Coffin books on shirtmaking and became even more determined to try my hand at sewing one for myself. Everything I read about shirtmaking emphasized the need for really good fabric, so this 100% cotton shirting was a no-brainer (SKU: DMC 5116). I mean, look at those stripes!
