Made by a Fabricista: Bright Pink!

Summer arrived full-force in South Dakota and when I think of hot weather, I automatically go to linen.  With this bright pink linen, I knew it would be a great dress.  Fabric Mart has such an awesome linen collection.  Have you checked it out?  You can do that here: Designer Quality Linen

There are so many wonderful colors to choose from!

I simply LOVE this stuff!  It washes and dries beautifully and it's made from completely natural fibers, so it sews and presses like a dream.  Need I say more???

Before I cut into my fabrics for this monthly post, I try and do some research.  For this month, I looked for summer dresses with easy silhouettes and fun sleeves.  This is the dress I came up with.

I really love those sleeves and I had read from several reviewers that the sleeves were fully lined and clever.  Sold!

I was a bit worried with how low this dress back slit is on a 50+ lady, but it works just fine!  And this linen, the dress calls for linen, so it was a match made in heaven!

Pink is such a fun color to wear!

The linen gives this dress structure, yet also lets it drape a bit, not in a flowing sort of way but in a way that works for the dress.

Here's a closer-up of that back slit.  I am wearing a cami.  I choose black so I could wear my black sandals.

Here is a closer-up of the sleeves.  These are made and constructed in a way that the sleeve itself has no seams exposed.  Very clever and what a nice finish it gives!

I so love FM's linen section.  If you never used it, what are you waiting for?

Thanks for reading!

  5. Your dress, and you in it, look beautiful. Women worry wa-a-a-a-y too much about what they can wear after a certain age. At 77, I'm really not concerned with what a 40-something fashion editor thinks or whether the style choices of 19-year-olds might limit my choices. (They don't.) You did exactly what I would have done - you wore the old miracle cami underneath. Styling is everything, and makes wearing an endless variety of styles possible.

    1. Aw, thanks so much! You are right, I do worry too much! Having said that, no one will see me in a midriff-revealing dress at my age!

Made By A Fabricista: Turning the Page

We had a lovely, warm September in central New Jersey but as of last week, fall has finally started to set in. While I’m no longer operating on a school calendar, I always look forward to the return of fall, the crisp air, the colorful leaves, and the opportunity to “turn over a new leaf.” While exploring the Fabric Mart website, browsing all their gorgeous cottons, I was incredibly inspired by the Eggshell/Black 100% Cotton Horizontal Stripe Weave Lawn . It looks exactly like a lined piece of paper. I thought it would make a fun top for work during this transitional season, one that sparks “blank page” creativity. I wanted to pair the top with a simple yet classic pair of pants, allowing each piece to be a quality addition to my work and loungewear wardrobe, working together and as separates. I picked up the beautiful Midnight Navy/White 100% Tencel Chambray , which has a fun denim-look while being quite soft and flowy. When designing the top, I wanted to play with the stripes. I chos...

Made By A Fabricista: Getting Ready for Fall with a Pinafore

Hooray, the best season has finally arrived again! I don’t know about you, but I spend all summer sweaty and wishing for cooler weather despite my massive appreciation for sundresses. I prefer a chill in the air, a breeze rustling my skirt, and layered garments for coziness!  Would you believe I have never sewn a wrap pinafore dress in all my hundreds of garments? It’s shocking, I know. I’ve had one on my mind for at least a year or two, but narrowing down the final pattern wasn’t easy. In the end, I chose the Fibre Mood Khloe Pinafore because I really like the straight, high neckline and the finishes at the wrapped bodice.  So here we are, combining the best of all possible worlds, a wrap pinafore that is utterly magnificent for summer, BUT adding a long sleeved layer underneath to take it seamlessly right into autumn.  On the dress, my only change was to widen the shoulder straps by doubling their width for better bra concealment when I wear it alone. I do wish I’d adde...
