Made by a Fabricista: PJs for all the girls

With snow in my Colorado future, I've had pjs on the brain.  I don't know what it is about cold weather and pajamas, but whenever the first snow hits, I want to sew all of the cozy things! With that in mind, I decided to delve into Fabric Mart's double brushed poly knits.  I've discovered double brushed poly recently and I love it for it's softness and the layering possibilities.  While my favorite base layer material are merino wools), double brushed poly has done a pretty awesome job providing warmth without a lot of bulk.  Layering is life in Colorado! Specifically, I went after a nice collection of knits to make pjs for my Mom, my daughter and me.  For my mom, this copper floral stripe double brushed poly , for me, another blue floral double brushed poly (sold out) and a steel blue sweater knit to make a cozy cardigan to top off my set of pajamas.  For my daughter I chose a fun cotton/lycra print (sold out, but there's t his cotton/lycra stripe that w...

Made by a Fabricista: Knits, Knits, Knits!

I love knits, they were my first sewing love. Some new sewists find sewing knits tricky, but I loved that the fit was more forgiving as I was learning sizing. This month three knits spoke to me and I couldn't decide between them so I just went again and got all THREE! First up is this black and white geometric print jersey knit. Everything about this fabric made me love it; it's a rayon jersey, it's black and white and it's a geometric print. It sewed up really nicely with minimal curling at the edges. I used my serger for most of the construction, which is another thing I love about knits. My first thought was a wrap dress, which should be no surprise. My favorite wrap dress pattern is the Mathilde Wrap Dress by Untitled Thoughts . It's a true wrap, which is always a plus to me. It features a 2 sleeve options, three length (including a peplum top), a waistband, inseam pockets and ties that meet in the back.

Made by a Fabricista: The Madison Cardigan by Style Sew Me Patterns

Happy Saturday All, Even though the weather in Florida is still in the 80s, I am gearing up for cooler days in November and December.  I have a love affair with cardigans as my work building is extremely cold and a lightweight cardigan is perfect for the cooler days or nights here in sunny South Florida. Two years ago when I did a review of 3 cardigan patterns here , I fell in love with the Madison Cardigan by Style Sew Me Patterns which is now available at Fabric Mart .  This easy to sew waterfall drape is stylish and can be dressed up or down. If you have been following my sewing journey, you know my favorite knit fabric is Ponte knit .  I absolutely love the feel, drape, recovery, and sturdiness of the fabric. Around this time of year, Fabric Mart typically carries a wide selection of colors perfect for Fall and Spring. When I came across this orange color , I knew I had to grab a few yards for a cardigan. Unfortunately, this is color is almost sold out but Fabri...

Made by a Fabricista: Winter is coming!

When I was browsing on Fabric Mart's amazing selections, I couldn't help but drool over the gorgeous coating by Michael Kors.  I love the designer fabric choices on the website.  Also, the price point of this amazing fabric made this a no-brainer for me.  I simply had to make another winter coat.   I live in the northern plains of the US and we can have winter coat weather from October until April or May.  That means, I need to have many choices for a winter coat.  Just having one or two is boring in my book!  I have numerous coats, most of which are made from FM's selection of coating. It appears this Michael Kors Coating color I used is all sold out, however there are some pretty choices here:  Coating You can see from the inside of the hood, I used a pretty floral for the lining.  I just love pretty lining fabrics.  This one has so many pretty colors in it and it's a floral, so it was love for me! Here's a view of the insid...

Made by a Fabricista: Cafe au Lait Linen Dress

Hello everyone. This linen dress is the first thing that I made after my husband passed away 2 months ago.  At first, it was a real struggle- I kept putting things together the wrong way and having to rip it out and do it over again.  I probably shouldn't have chosen an asymmetrical design with fabric that looks the same on both sides for my first project!  But as I finished, I felt a real sense of accomplishment!  I have to say that creating something unique and special was just what I needed to feel a little like myself again.   I used three coordinating pieces of linen- a deep coffee colored brown, a milky cream, and an abstract print with whipped cream, cloves, and cinnamon it- thus, my cafe au lait dress!  These particular fabrics are no longer available, but there are lots of other choices in the Linen section .  Linen is so wonderful to work with.  You do need to accept that wrinkles will be part of the look though, which I am f...

Made by a Fabricista: Nova Jumpsuit

Hey there and happy fall! How's everyone's fall going? Mine?  Crazy! Our family has had a few changes over the past six months, as I know everyone else has too! One large change for us was a move!!! We had a family friend move in with us in March, and were lacking a bedroom for this friend. She stayed in our dining room, with a curtain for a door and we immediately went on the hunt for a house with another bedroom. Well, apparently everyone else thought it was a great time to move too! Our house hunt took a few months, but we are in our new to us house and we're surrounded with boxes, and chaos, but everyone has a room! Our new house is a 100 year old spanish bungalow and I am in love with it! It needs renovating and updating, but it is in great condition and is just so cute and full of character! I pulled out my sewing machine last week and was thrilled that I could find where all of my sewing things were packed. I sewed the Nova Jumpsuit pattern by True Bias and it is th...
