Fabric Mart Fabricistas

Hello Fellow Sewists! I am excited to share my very first Fabricista project with you all. As I thought about what I wanted to see for my March project, I started thinking about Spring and Easter. My mind about immediately went to Easter white, so I decided I wanted to make an Easter Sunday worthy look featuring white fabric. As luck has it, I found a beautiful white cotton/rayon blend suiting and an incredibly gorgeous black and white textured bouclé fabric. It was hard tell for sure, but they seemed the whites would match. And to my joy, the fabrics arrived and were a perfect match.  (Look at the texture on this bouclé!) Full disclosure, I struggled a bit to narrow down what exactly I wanted to make with the fabrics. Originally, I planned to make a two piece set (skirt or pants and a top) with the white suiting fabric and then a coordinating trench style coat with the bouclé.  From vision to reality. As we are headed into April, I can feel the spring breeze on the horizon and with that means fun time outside, be it eating brunch with friends on a terrace or going to the park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  I knew that I wanted to add some bright fun color into my spring wardrobe that I really haven't used and over a year.  I had been eyeing this beautiful red stripe shirting with blue roses fabric for a while not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with it but knew that I was super drawn to it.   Once I picked it up, I decided to sketch out my ideas and went through my pattern stash to see what I could come up with. For this project I used a vintage pattern See & Sew 5549.  It’s actually for a long sleep shirt that I then made some alterations to.  I lengthened the sleeves by an inch and extended the side slits up to the waistline because I knew that I would mostly be wearing this shirt open.  Also since I planne...

When it comes to creating wardrobes for my children, I don't tend to have a theme or a plan — I see pretty fabric or an amazing pattern and I just have to make it! While this is a fun and creative outlet for me, it's not always so great for my children (or husband!) who then struggle to mix and match their wardrobe, or discover they have 100 dresses and no pants or sweaters.  Armed with a $50 budget, I decided to plan out a series of mix and match outfits for my two girls.  Fabric Mart always has so many amazing fabrics but I just couldn't go past this gorgeous aqua floral Rayon Lycra Jersey Knit! With spring on the horizon, linen seemed like a natural coordinate choice (Fabric Mart have a TON of linens , so it was easy to pick a few colors that would work!), and finally I settled on a white Rayon Lycra Jersey Knit to use as a layer.  Summer Dreaming | A Tropical Faux Jumpsuit and Sheer Ruffled Duster I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring with its promise of warmer temps and lots of sunshine.  Anyone else? With that in mind, I choose to showcase two of the fabulous shirting fabrics offered by Fabric Mart Fabrics. The combination of the semi-sheer shirting with the tropical print shirting has me dreaming of walking along a beach with the waves gently lapping against the shoreline and the sun shining brightly down on me. The coral shirting is a beautiful piece of fabric with its hint of shimmer and tiny stripes alternating between opaque and sheer.  I choose to sew a tiered maxi-length button front dress using Simplicity 9114.  Because of the semi-sheer nature of the fabric, I will wear this as a duster. Hello Everyone, I am so excited to share my first make as a Fabric Mart Fabricista. As the weather starts to get warmer and the need for a heavy winter jacket ceases, I thought it would be nice to make a jacket for those cool spring days. The Fabric. I selected a mint green wool/nylon blend wool coating fabric. This fabric is a mid/heavy weight and could get thick once you add in interfacing and lining. I got 2.5 yards and it was perfect to make this short sleeve jacket. I pre-shrunk the wool using the wet towel and dryer method. The fabric presses well, but I didn’t apply steam directly onto it. I used a silk organza pressing cloth to avoid heat scorching. The Pattern. I selected Vogue 1758 from their winter/holiday collection. It’s loose-fitting lined jacket/vest with belt, different sleeves and length options. It also includes style details like patch pocket, cuffed sleeves and side slits.
