Hello everyone! I’m very excited to contribute to Fabricista blog once more! I made another brand new cosplay: Reiko Kujirai from Kowloon Generic Romance!
Kowloon Generic Romance is a sci-fi, romance & mystery manga series. It was later adapted to a TV anime and live action film! This series takes place in Kowloon Walled City. It’s about a woman named Reiko Kujirai who suffers from memory loss and doesn't remember her past. She works at a realty estate management company with her co-worker Hajime Kudou, a very easy going and brash man who’s also her crush! Reiko lives her life in Kowloon, while also trying to discover who she is, and the mysteries of this city (I will not spoil everything! You’re going to have to check it out for yourself!). I binged the anime in one day and really enjoyed it. The story and the characters are very intriguing. I love that the main characters are in their 30s, which is very rare in anime!
After watching the anime, I knew that I had to cosplay Reiko! I decided to make the blue vest & skirt that she wears at work. I used the Robert Kaufman Baby Blue Polyester Shirting fabric! It’s lightweight and perfect for the summer, which is also the season that this series takes place!
I made a mockup of the skirt first by wrapping mockup fabric around my hips and legs and pinned. Then I trimmed, took off, sewed and made adjustments until I was satisfied. Then I transferred the mockup to the main fabric and sewed.
I then made the waistband out of the same fabric, sewed it to the skirt and inserted elastic.
For the vest I used a vest pattern and made some mockups. Then I transferred the mockup pieces to the main fabric and sewed. I used the same fabric for the lining as well.
I made and added fake welt pockets for aesthetic reasons!
I made the buttons with the same fabric and a button cover kit. I had this kit for a while, and thought that it’ll be the perfect time to finally use it! It was my first time making buttons this way, and the process was easier than I thought! I really love how the buttons came out!
I then made the button holes with my sewing machine and hand sewed the buttons!
Reiko is now done! I’m ready to help people move into new homes, crush on my co-worker, and discover who I really am!
Costuming is a lot of fun. You can use yours for real day to day living. Enjoy!!!

ReplyDeleteThe outfit is so cute on you. Back in the 80s, this is what I actually wore to work. What’s particularly impressive to me is even as a plus size, you were courageous enough to make and wear a pencil skirt. It’s the perfect length (so many of all sizes cut the skirt too short so that it appears wider than it is longer; imo that’s not a good look).
ReplyDeleteI’m not one to randomly comment on sites like this, however I wanted to let you know how great this look on you! Just be careful to insure the button on the waistband stays on your waistband. 1) If you're trying to keep it buttoned throughout the days, try a slightly larger button. 2) if it is a little loose on the skirt or slips open easy, re-enforce sewing on the button. My experience was that once I sneezed and said button became a projectile flying across the room.
Can you share your height? You’re similar in shape/size to my daughter, and I’m wondering if this would look good on her as well. Also, I may have missed it, but did you use patterns or ….
You got a nice fit, and picked a great fabric - this outfit would work beyond cosplay. Covered buttons are sweet, aren’t they? And not difficult to make either.
