Made by a Fabricista: Sewing Lingerie With Stretch Lace & Mesh

Lingerie sewing is so addictive!! Once I get the fit down of a particular bra or undies pattern, I want to make 4,647 of each of them. I sewed up my first bra a few years back and my lingerie sewing stash has multiplied like bunnies since. I've picked up a bunch of stretch meshes and stretch laces from Fabric Mart in recent months, I never need to order more than one yard at a time because these projects take itty bitty bits of material.  My bra is Orange Lingerie's Marlborough pattern. It's approximately a 38B... I say approximately because the pattern is altered for my figure. I've sewn up lots of Orange Lingerie bras before, this was my first go with her undies. You can see my complete journey fitting and sewing up the Marlborough bra  from day one-- it started a little over a year ago when the pattern was first released. The gorgeous stretch floral mesh is a Maggy London nylon/spandex I picked up this summer from Fabric Mart. I...

Made By a Fabricista: The Final Draft

Here we are again with my attempt at sewing a bra! I didn't feel so successful in  my first attempt and was a bit discouraged. But I'm willing to give it another shot. For my final draft fabric I chose an activewear knit and used the stretch lace again. I also have a bit of nude soft elastic I found in our brick and mortar shop in Sinking Spring that I will use. All of my supplies are from Fabric Mart. View some of our activewear knits here: http://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/xcart/Active-Wear-Knit/ Look for Stretch Laces in our lace section: http://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/xcart/Lace-fabrics/ Before cutting on my "good pieces of scrap fabric" I took another look at the PDF pattern. I marked each piece with what it was since after cutting out the pattern, I lost some important information which led to me getting terribly confused and eventually took a long extended break from sewing the bra. I then traveled back to the Ohhh Lu Lu blog and ...

Sew Along: Sewing the muslin

Have you ever used a PDF pattern before? This is my first time using one and I'm a little nervous about the instructions because they do not have picture diagrams. However, ohhh Lulu does and instructional blog posts on their website to help guide you through the process. I am sure I will be visiting those often!  For those who are not familiar with PDF patterns I thought I would elaborate on the process.  A PDF pattern is often bought online and you receive the pattern by email. You save the document to your computer and then print following the instructions written by the seller. Independent pattern designers typically use this method.  You will print the pattern out and cut off the margins if instructed to do so.  From there you piece the pattern together following the grid system, placing matching letters and numbers side by side. (B1 is matched to B1, remember to check each side to make sure they match) The pattern will start to come to...

Sew Along: Lingerie

It's Katie with a new adventure! For the month of February I will be doing a sew along for making lingerie. I have never actually made lingerie, but I love pretty underthings. Especially vintage pretty underthings! However, when I visit a gorgeous lingerie shop I often run into a few of the same problems each time: 1. They seem to NEVER make them in my size. Apparently the lace and silk beauties only start at a B cup. You see where this is going. 2. The price tag for a wonderful under set is about half a week's pay. And seeing how I'm getting very small items, I cannot justify the purchase. So I think it is about time I do something about this! Who's with me?! I have to admit, I am rather nervous about making a bra. It seems so scary! So many notions! So many pieces! AH! I decided to use the pattern Ginger Suit from the shop Ohhh Lulu   Here are a bra  and  panties from her shop, are they not just adorable? I think I have s...
