Made By A Fabricista: A Designer-Inspired Jacket in an Embroidered Silk Suiting

Hello my sewing friends!   When September rolls around many of us look forward to wearing cozy sweaters while sipping pumpkin spice lattes. However, I live in a warm ­weather state – umm, scratch that – I live in a hot weather state, and I wear layering pieces rather than cozy sweaters. Like this jacket! Vogue 1831 is a Gucci-inspired jacket pattern that was released a few months ago. The fully lined jacket looks like a basic jacket from the front, but turn around and you’ll find an inverted pleat with an adorable bow detail! I wanted to sew this jacket to wear with jeans and when I saw this embroidered silk suiting, I knew I’d found my fabric. There is a gold metallic swirl embroidered into the fabric that glitters slightly when the light hits those threads.  Trust me, the photos don’t capture the beauty of this fabric. Past Fabricista Guest Post: Class Reunion Dress July 2021

Hello everyone!  I’m returning to the blog for a special event dress- I needed something to wear to my 40th class reunion!  Of course, Fabric Mart had the perfect fabric for it- an embroidered eyelet cotton gauze.  Here in the northern hemisphere, the weather has been hot and humid, so I knew that I wanted something lightweight and breathable.   So many ready to wear special occasion dresses are all polyester, which would just make me hot and sweaty, so I dusted off the sewing machine after several months of non-use, and got to work so that I could make something that I would be comfortable wearing.   The fabric had a single border, and was just 48” wide, so I ordered 4-3/4 yards just to make sure that I had enough fabric.  I wasn’t sure what style I was going to make when I ordered it, but I also anticipated that being a cotton gauze, it would have significant shrinkage.  I prewashed and dried it before cutting out my pattern pieces.
