Made By A Fabricista: Getting into the Spirit of Summer

I'm not gonna lie y'all, I had a completely different project I wanted to do, but that's gonna take more time, and I wanted something cute, comfy and fun to wear for my birthday on the 19th.

When I saw this goldenrod & off white linen jacquard, I thought it looked a bit like the design on a Koroks body, especially Makar from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker!

I started with the bodice from the free Elderberry dress pattern from Mood, but deviated for the skirt, it felt a little plain of a design, and I had scraps of a Korok fabric that I knew would be a nice accent with some cut out pockets.

I've made these pockets once before, deciding the cut out was based on aligning with the seam on the bodice for how far in, and as for how low depended on where I wanted the pouch of the pocket to start. From there I cut the visible part of the pocket, making sure to match the curve of the waist and following the line of the side seams of the skirt, as well as cutting a facing to finish the cut curve and make the other half of the pocket.

To give the bodice a little more structure and me some modesty, I chose to line it with some of the left over cotton from my Nene Yashiro cosplay I made back in January. Unfortunately for this, I wasn't able to avoid my nemesis; the zipper. I sewed it in to the outer layer by machine, but I like to finish the lining by hand to avoid visible top stitching.


Once the dress was sewn, I used some leftover green apple linen from my Ren faire outfit, some felt, and scraps of black linen, I made Makars leaf mask, and yes I can see through the eyes, or at least one eye at a time lol

Then I took advantage of my last over scraps to make a little Makar plushie! I followed the pattern from Sew Desu Ne to assemble him, which was very quick and easy, but added some extra stitches and gathered his back dart seam to give him a little defined booty!

This project was so fun, and I'm excited to add something nerdy to my daily wardrobe!

    Beautiful fabric! Happy Birthday - you made a wonderful dress for your special day! My son used to love the Legend of Zelda - I had forgotten about that happy memory - hope your birthday provides happy memories for you!

If you don’t know in October my beloved Bernina sewing machine blew a fuse and started smoking while I was using it. She went to the shop for repairs, and then I moved. Made By A Fabricista: From My Imagination to My Closet

One of my favorite parts of sewing is taking an idea that exists only in my head and turning it into something I can actually wear. This project was exactly that—a quick, intuitive exercise in imagination, experimentation, and trusting my process, brought to life with Fabric Mart’s sweatshirt fleece. I started with a loose concept rather than a fixed plan. I knew I wanted something comfortable, but still fashion-forward—elevated loungewear that felt intentional rather than basic. Fabric choice was key, and Fabric Mart’s sweatshirt fleece ended up being the perfect foundation. Working with Fabric Mart Sweatshirt Fleece This fleece was an absolute dream to work with. It has a slight stretch, which made the final outfit incredibly comfortable while still maintaining structure. Made By A Fabricista: A Wooly Wearable Blanket.

Twirling in a me-made outfit! I live in a small town where the nearest fabric shop is a road trip away, so I almost exclusively shop for fabric online. Having access to an online shop like Fabric Mart with a solid search engine is incredibly helpful. But by far my favorite aspect of Fabric Mart is what I call the “Drape Picture” included in each listing! This picture gives me all the information I need and I find it more helpful than the exact weight per yard/square meter.  Seeing how the fabric falls close or away from the body gives me a clear idea of how it will behave and inspires me to make it into something that will highlight the fabric’s nature.  When I saw the drape of this “Baked Plum” wool suiting , I immediately wanted to immortalize those beautiful folds into a skirt! I opted for a simple self-drafted pleated skirt with a deep hem. I wear my dresses year-round and rely on wool skirts that I layer under or over my dresses for warmth.
