Made By A Fabricista: When Prints Align: Sewing a Matching Set with Designer Mesh & Charmeuse

Every now and then, a fabric pairing stops you in your tracks—and this was one of those moments.  As soon as I spotted this designer mesh and coordinating charmeuse on Fabric Mart Fabrics, I didn’t hesitate—I immediately requested both. It’s rare to find the same (or closely matching) print across different fabric types, and when you do, it opens the door to something really special. I already knew I wanted to create a cohesive set that felt effortless, elevated, and perfect for a resort-inspired look. The Vision For this project, I paired two patterns that felt like an instant match: • Tasha Trousers by Viki Sews – a clean, tailored trouser that drapes beautifully and gives that relaxed-but-polished resort feel. • Carmen Top by Patterns by Dee – a stunning wrap-style top that mimics the viral TikTok wrap shirt. It’s modern, flattering, and lets the fabric really shine. The result is a lightweight, statement-making set that feels both comfortable and high fashion. The charm...

Made by a Fabricista: Critical Ruffle

For the uninitiated, Critical Role is a group of nerdy voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons every Thursday. I've already been a long time fan and cosplayer of the character Jester Lavorre from their second campaign (recently adapted to the animated series The Mighty Nein), but recently they started their fourth campaign! With this new campaign, we got a new cast of characters and I absolutely fell in love with the chaotic pink demon named Tyranny.  When looking at my options for fabric for Tyrannys outfit, I found the perfect fabrics, a seafoam-blue polyester taffeta and a platinum colored charmeuse . The colors were perfect and I loved the combination of textures that felt appropriate for Tyrannys role as an aspirant of a religious order.  When it came to patterning the cosplay, I used my go to bodice pattern, adjusting to have a zipper at center front that would be covered by the tabard that was also cut out of the taffeta stiffened with interfacing and with the char...

Made By A Fabricista: Birthday Dress

May is my absolute favorite month, we get to enjoy spring weather and it is my birth month.  The birthstone for May is Emerald. I think emerald is such a gorgeous color so when I saw this beautiful ombre charmeuse I thought it would be the perfect fabric to make for my birthday dress.  To be honest it took me a while to narrow down on a design.  After a lot of back and forth I ended up going back to my first sketch that I created. I love to sketch out my ideas to figure out the patterning and materials. To create the design I used the method of draping on my dressform.  I used the lightweight muslin that Fabric Mart offers.  It is always best to use a muslin or material similar to your final fabric.  I started first by marking my style lines with some draping tape on my dress form.  I tore out pieces of muslin to fit within those lines making sure I am always marking my grainline. I also used the muslin to determine how I will create the rosettes onto...

Made By A Fabricista: April Showers, May Flowers

Spring has finally sprung & warmer weather is upon us. Today, I am back with two new Fabric Mart makes. Let me start by saying this has been my favorite fabric to date. The feel, drape, and pattern of the fabric was absolutely beautiful I could not wait to get it home to create something! This time around I wanted to push myself a bit & create something that I usually don’t & that happened to be a corset. For this garment, I chose pattern McCall’s #MonicaMccalls, or pattern number 8182 in View C, which had an angled V in the front. The pattern has the option of closing with ties, or a separating zipper. I chose the zipper option, but I moved the zipper from the front to the back. I think moving the zipper to the back created a little bit more unity to the corset for me. I loved making this corset. I usually don’t lean to making tops, because I have run into fitting issues in the past, but this turned out nice. My only hiccup I had was not realizing sooner, about how much bo...

Made By A Fabricista: Silky Prints for a Tropical Vacation

Hello again!   I want to share with you my latest project using silky prints. My family had been planning to go to the Virgin Islands for a vacation. For this trip I wanted loose-fitting outfits. When the summer Vogue patterns were released, I fell in love with the vintage Vogue V1886 caftan. It is ankle length and the sleeves fell elegantly to the hemline, hitting the arm slightly above the elbows. It has a scooped back, which would make it comfortable in hot weather. There are side panels, but no seams. I could wear this relaxing under an umbrella during the day or for an evening stroll to enjoy the breeze on the beach. FM’s polyester lightweight charmeuse silky prints caught my eye. Even though I swore I would never again sew slippery fabrics, the coastal mountain print on the fabric (SKU UQA7666r) was hard to resist.  The moonstone blue/berry pink/medium blue/taupe were cool relaxing colors. While looking at the first fabric, I saw another silky print (SKU UQA7667r) th...
