Made By A Fabricista: Dee + Dory

Dee: Thank you Fabric Mart for this wonderful ITY fabric that has a marvelous stretch and recovery!! I would call it a travel knit because you can just throw the dress all crumpled up and there will not be a wrinkle in it when you go wear it.  It is a Polyester/Lycra blend and drapes beautifully. I used it to make McCalls 7561. The fabric makes for a very comfortable wear. This dress will be perfect for transition into fall as cooler weather approaches. But right now we’re in the middle of summer and I find it perfect to wear in those really chilly air-conditioned buildings. The issue that I had with the fabric, being that it is so silky and luscious, was that it was very slippery to work with. I needed to be very careful and patient when cutting out the fabric and throughout the sewing process. Be sure to use the correct needle for the fabric!! I would advise walking foot. Happy Sewing!!! Dory: Dory’s fabricista make is from a beautiful Rayon/Linen blend fabric.  It’...

Made By A Fabricista: Over the Rainbow

This time around I didn't have a specific cosplay in mind I wanted to make, but while doing my usual window shopping on the website, I found the perfect blue and white gingham shirting fabric and knew what I had to make! I wanted something a little extra with it, so I opted to get in addition to the gingham, this novelty weave suiting  in yellow and finally got to use one of the colorways of the large floral voiles  that reminded me of the poppies in Wizard of Oz, as well as the orange poppies in my home state of California. Since I was making this more for my wardrobe than a cosplay, I opted to make two pieces that could work independently or together. The poppy fabric got cut into three panels to be a knee length skirt for me, and since I was just pleating the width into a skirt, I had no excess to use for pockets, so for now this skirt has no pockets, but would be easy enough to add them at a later date since I was able to use the selvedge for the seams making this an easy...

Made By A Fabricista: Stone World Fashion

Dr. Stone is one of my favorite animes overall, it's premise being the whole world was turned to stone for 3700 years and following the adventures of Senku and his Kingdom of Science to try and restore all of humanity. When UwU Con announced their guest lineup had several voices from the show I knew I had to cosplay one of my favorite characters from the show, Nikki Hanada! I opted for her first outfit, a more simple green dress. For my fabric choices I wanted to go with what fabrics would be plausible for the show, so I opted for this green medium-heavy weight   wool   and a beige  linen  novelty weave suiting for her belt to add a bit of texture. To add additional dimension to the dress, I used spray fabric paint in black on my cut out pieces around the edges to give the dress more dimension with a look of wear and tear and dirt. (Don't tell my mom I stained my porch!) The pattern I used was one of my go to patterns, I couldn't tell you what the original medi...

Made By A Fabricista: Hats For Yellowstone

This summer my wonderful partner Tim and I had the opportunity to go out to Yellowstone National Park. Tim’s dad is working there this summer as a park ranger, so we trekked out from Pennsylvania to visit! With 40° temperature swings and sudden rain showers on clear days, the weather in Yellowstone can be kind of insane. While I knew I wanted to make something to bring and wear, my cute little dresses weren’t going to make the cut. So what could I make? Then I remembered a virtual sewing class I took with Fabric Mart nearly two years ago on Elbe Textiles’ bucket hat pattern. Fabric Mart had also gotten in a few different water repellent fabrics. Perfect. I decided to make three different hats: one for myself, one for my partner, and one for his mom. After consulting with my coworkers on colors I picked three different 100% nylon water repellent shirtings ( CAC5934 and CDD5952 still in stock) and a polyester/polyurethane PUL fabric ( DUC5909 ). I paired the dark gray shirting with a L...

Made By A Fabricista: The Making of a Complete Outfit

Hi Guys!  For this month’s post, I wanted to make a complete outfit.  What does that even mean, right? To me, that means a top and bottom. I noticed that I make a lot of dresses and skirts and I wanted to make some separates this month.  I decided on making these pleated trousers.  This pattern is part of Sew It Academy.  I also received Mimi G’s new book called, Make It Yours with Mimi G, which I totally love.  To sum it up, the book comes with 7 basic patterns that help build your wardrobe and then she shows you how to hack these patterns into a different garment.  I decided to make The Fitted Tee from the book to go with my pleated trousers. Since I already knew what I was going to be making this month, I knew what fabrics I wanted to work with.  For the T-shirt, I wanted a soft, opaque knit fabric.  I came across this Coral Red Rayon/Lycra Light Weight Jersey Knit .  This fabric is everything I was hoping it would be.  It has a ...

Made By A Fabricista: Hacking Patterns

Do you like to hack your sewing patterns?  To hack a pattern, you are basically altering it from its original design.  Most times I see an inspiration online or in-stores and I check my pattern stash to see what pattern I have that I could easily modify to fit the design.  For this blog post I used 3 different fabrics to create 3 different looks by hacking the selected patterns I used. For the first look I took McCall’s 7999 which is a TNT pattern for me.  To hack it I first converted the pattern from a set-in sleeve to a raglan sleeve style.  I had an inspiration picture that I referenced of a knit dress sketch. The rib knit I choose was perfect for this project.  I had a good weight and excellent stretch retention which I liked for this design.  I also liked the speckle detail that was in the fabric. Once I made my style lines, I then created open curved shapes along the sleeve seamline and added binding.  I really love my new dress; this is the...
