Made By A Fabricista: Stone World Fashion

Dr. Stone is one of my favorite animes overall, it's premise being the whole world was turned to stone for 3700 years and following the adventures of Senku and his Kingdom of Science to try and restore all of humanity.

When UwU Con announced their guest lineup had several voices from the show I knew I had to cosplay one of my favorite characters from the show, Nikki Hanada! I opted for her first outfit, a more simple green dress.

For my fabric choices I wanted to go with what fabrics would be plausible for the show, so I opted for this green medium-heavy weight wool and a beige linen novelty weave suiting for her belt to add a bit of texture.

To add additional dimension to the dress, I used spray fabric paint in black on my cut out pieces around the edges to give the dress more dimension with a look of wear and tear and dirt. (Don't tell my mom I stained my porch!)

The pattern I used was one of my go to patterns, I couldn't tell you what the original medieval princess pattern it once was, I've just repeatedly traced it from project to project, this time from my Ogre Fiona cosplay which was copied from my Merida cosplay, which was copied from a dress from my high school play costume. I did end up adding a dart at center back to be able to get a tighter fit at the waist without sacrificing the fullness of the skirt and reshaped the neckline and shoulders for a thinner strap.

Aside from the seams that were sewn and pressed, I left the edges raw since the wool wasn't at risk for fraying and I don't think the characters cared for beat hems in the stone world. For the belt I did seam together several 6” wide strips together with flat felled seams and finished the edges with a rolled hem.

Once I had the dress assembled, I then needed to play around with the side slits, my skirt was fuller than I needed it to be so it took a little trial and error to cut away enough without cutting away too much.

The next challenge was the large holes that the belt passes through, for this I was able to find curtain grommets that looked like metal and fit the size I needed. It was absolutely nerve wracking to cut large holes into my dress, but they turned out exactly as I hoped!

With that and a couple of scrap leather hair bows, my Nikki cosplay was done! She's definitely a more niche character in the large cast of great characters, but I love her for her strength and her morals that lead her to be the “big sister” that keeps some of the other characters in line!

Made By A Fabricista: Wrapped up in Denim

Denim is definitely one of my favorite fabrics to wear during the fall, more than any other season. I'm sharing my first denim project for Fall 2023 in this months Fabricista feature because let's be real, its one of the most iconic fabrics ever, its always in style and most everything can be made with denim. This denim is Fabric Marts Deep Prussian Blue 100% Cotton Denim, and it was the perfect fabric for this project. I really enjoyed working with this denim. It had a little more drape and body than most denims that are stiff and don't provide much give, but of course that's the good thing about denim, it comes in so many ranges which makes it clearly the best fabric for any project. I created a hack for my most recent Fall KnowMe pattern, ME2054. But not only did I hack this pattern, but I did a pattern mash with my Spring KnowMe pattern ME2020, creating this cool, chic denim jumpsuit.  Now, I've really gotten into creating jumpsuits more than ever. We all know h...

Made By A Fabricista: Spring Into Bold Closet Core Mitchell Trousers in Linen Cotton

Hello Sewing Friends! It's Tira from Tira Cooks and I am so excited to share my very first Fabricista make with you all! When I spotted this white linen cotton blend with bold black and green printed illustrations I immediately knew it was the perfect way to welcome spring. The combination of linen and cotton keeps you cool during the day and comfortable as the evening cools down truly the ideal spring fabric. Can we take a moment to appreciate this print? Cheetah print, a sun face, long stripes, and flowers all in one design. Everything you would not expect to see together, but somehow it just works. What really drew me in is the scale of the print it is bold enough that you can see every single detail. Unexpected, maximalist, and done right. Before cutting into anything, we cannot skip fabric prep! Linen cotton blends must be pre-washed before cutting to prevent shrinkage. I also recommend serging or zigzagging raw edges immediately to control the heavy fraying that linen is...
