Made by a Fabricista: Bold Beautiful Crepe Spring Look

Hello Gems! I'm so excited it’s finally Spring time! I've been inspired by color lately. It could be the beautiful flowers in bloom or the bright sunny days we’ve been having! Whatever it is, it has illuminated my creative senses and I’ve been feeling so inspired. So I just have to share with you my most recent make as a Fabricista with Fabric Mart using this bold red-orange and purple Crepe de Chine.  The fabric is a very fluid and drapey crepe fabric.  I’ve also noticed wide leg pants hitting the scene for Spring and I thought this crepe would make a great pair of wide leg pants. It’s a medium weight, opaque and falls so nicely against the skin.  The print is a leopard print with a pin stripe detail. In this red-orange and purple color combo this is a very bold and playful print but can still make for a sophisticated look so I wanted to give you a little bit of both of those aspects in the actual look. I'm not much for a jumpsuit but I love the fact that this two piece ...

Made by a Fabricista: Celebrating My Birthday In Style

Hello everyone! I am absolutely thrilled to share with you what I sewed to celebrate my birthday.   After social distancing the last few months in athleisure wear and old house clothes, I wanted to wear something much different for my birthday at the end of February.  I wanted a floaty drapey maxi dress!  When I came across V9168 by designer Kathryn Brenne in my pattern stash, I knew this was the look of my dream dress.  I could twirl around in the full circle skirt as if on air with no cares in the world and enjoy my special day.  And if I had the opportunity to join a Casino Night or Great Gatsby Party or Mardi Gras, all of which are usually held around my birthday, the slip can double as my party dress!  I love slip dresses.  They are so sexy and fun to dress up or down for the occasion.  Fortunately Fabric Mart was running a sale on polyester georgettes , a fabric recommended by the pattern, and there was one in cobalt blue color. I...

Made by a Fabricista: Summer Time Blues

Hello again and happy July!  In April, I started sewing a work wardrobe in red and black, and I decided to expand that work wardrobe to include blue and white.  I just love the combination of blue and white especially in the summer!  For my work wardrobe, I want fabrics that do not wrinkle easily, can be laundered, and can mix and match with other fabrics.   I ordered several coordinating fabrics- a white ponte , a blue chiffon print , a blue geometric crepe de chine, and a blue double weave suiting .  Most of these are still available as I write this, but are in the 60-70% off categories, so if you like any, I would order soon! Have you ever used a Burda Style pattern magazine?  I used to always subscribe the Burda Plus magazine which is for larger sizes, but they stopped making it in English and I stopped my subscription.  I missed it so much, that I took a chance and ordered it in French directly from France on burdastyle.fr .  It...

Made by a Fabricista: Vacay Vibes

Caftans scream VACATION! Which is probably why I wanted to make this one in time for my vacay next month. I don't know about you, but on vacation I want to be cute but also comfortable and a caftan is the perfect balance between the two.

Made by a Fabricista: Thakoon Holiday Party Dress

Holiday parties are just around the corner and I am feeling so prepared in this awesome Thakoon silk Crepe de Chine dress!!!  I mean, just look at it, I can feel dressed up (because of the silk) and ready for a full plate of food (thanks to the loose fitting shape).  Win, win.  I feel pretty certain that quite a few of you snatched up some of this yardage because it is all sold out!  But I'd like to say that the feel of it is a slight bit textured and that it was the least fussy silk I've ever sewn with.  I did not even have to use any stabilizer to bring it into submission, it behaved with just a light touch and some gentle coaxing...so nice.  I hate to go on and on about how wonderful the fabric is because its sold out but I really feel the lesson here is that the designer fabrics Fabric Mart offers are really awesome in quality. During my partnership with Fabric Mart I've had the pleasure and luxury of sewing with some really gorgeous designer fa...

Made by a Fabricista: Silk Crepe de Chine Soft Pleated Maxi Dress

So before I get into this garment, I need you to know I spent 10 (yes 10) days home with this fabric.  I took a mental staycation from work and just did a bunch of nothing with kid time sprinkled here and there.  I woke up Superbowl Sunday morning to a phone call.  It was my best friend that asked what I was doing for the day to which I responded "I need to sew something, anything today".  She responded, "what did you end up doing with the green silk"?  Yup.... I forgot this dress was due this week.   The fabric used 4.5 yards of  kelly green silk crepe de shine from Fabric Mart which I snagged during the sale a couple weeks back.  It is no longer available, but check out these alternatives ( HERE ), ( HERE ), & ( HERE ). My plans were to make some sort of maxi with pleats, so I had a good starting point.  This dress will be one of many garments I am making for my upcoming birthday trip to Guadeloupe.  I didn't have much tim...
