Fabricista Fashion Challenge 3 Announced! Looking for Bloggers

Attention Sewing Bloggers! We’re looking for 6 enthusiastic sewing bloggers to participate in the Fabricista Fashion Challenge 3! What is this you may ask? This is a 5-week sewing challenge where you will be given a weekly project to complete to the best of your abilities. Each week will have a criteria for judging and will be judged by some of your favorite personalities in the sewing industry. 

All the Details: 
The entire sewing time for the challenge will run from September 11-October 14. A new challenge will be posted to the public every Friday morning, with the first one being Friday, September 11th. You will have until the following Tuesday night to submit your entries, so that on Wednesday morning I can post the finished projects.     
     
There will be a total of 4 challenges and they will be posted on: Friday, Sept 11, 18, 25, October 2 (the last week challengers will have 2 weeks to complete.)

Judging: Each week, you will be given a set of criteria. This will change slightly each week but usually will include fit, quality, craftsmanship and creativity. Each week there will be at least one "Celebrity Judge" on the panel. (I'm working on trying to get two each week!) Along with myself, we will chat about how each person met the criteria and select a winner of the challenge. We will also have a Viewers Choice voting which the winner will be given a prize. 

Reader Participation: Last year we introduced Reader Participation on Flickr. This year, we won't be doing it on Flickr, but having you share it on social media using #fabricistafashionchallengereader. Each week, post photos of your progress and completed challenges. We will choose one winner each week to win a prize! (Prize TBA, closer to the date. Only open to citizens of US and Canada, for shipping purposes.) 

Fun All Around! This challenge is for the fun in it (and winning some prizes on top of it) for participants, readers, judges and myself! It is definitely hard to choose the "best" in the group, especially because we are doing everything through photographs and periodic written responses. So we're looking for participants that are good sports about a fun challenge that will expand your sewing abilities!

Prizes!
Grand Prize Winner will receive: $25 a month for one year to spend on fabric, plus be a Fabric Mart Fabricista for 6 months writing guest posts for the blog. (A $300 value with media exposure.) You will also receive a Julie's Picks Membership.

Second place will receive: $100 gift certificate to spend at Fabric Mart, plus a Julie's Picks Membership.

Third place will receive: $50 gift certificate to spend at Fabric Mart, plus a Julie's Picks Membership.

PLUS! Additional prizes for the winner of each challenge.

- A link to your blog's homepage
- 3 images of current sewing projects
- A short paragraph telling us why you think you would be a great candidate for the challenge.

All challenges will be based on sewing for yourself, so keep that in mind when entering. You must be able to participate during the entire challenge (September 10-October 14). Sorry, previous challenge contestants will not be considered. While we would love you to participate, we would like to give other fabulous sewists a chance too! Open to citizens of the US and Canada (due to shipping you things for the challenges and risk of it not getting to you in time.) Entries are due by Tuesday, August 18th!

      There are a couple platforms out there that you can start a blog on. Blogger and Wordpress are common. You can email me for more information.

Return to work wardrobe in ITY – which is your favorite?

In June of this year, after spending nearly 11 years at my place of employment and after restructuring and cost cutting, I took a separation package. I was so fortunate to be able to take a few months off, and also to very quickly find a position with a new company. Hillhouse Nap Dress Dupe with Fabric Mart Fabric!

I have been wanting a Hill House Home Nap Dress for the longest time, but when I saw the reviews that the fabric was too sheer and the price tag—often well over $200—I decided it would be much more fun to make my own! I found this gorgeous abstract navy and white cotton voile from Fabric Mart and knew it would be perfect for the light, floaty dupe I had in mind. Cotton voile is soft, lightweight, and beautifully suited for a shirred dress like the infamous Nap dress. This abstract print gives the finished dress a more modern feel. I love a floral fabric, but I was excited to find this abstract print in my favorite color of navy.  Rather than using an entire dress pattern, I followed Just Lauren Johnson’s YouTube tutorial on how to create a Nap Dress from rectangles. Lauren walks you through how to use your own measurements to calculate the dimensions of the bodice, skirt tiers, and other pieces. Sometimes The Fabric Chooses The Pattern

Have you ever fallen in love with a fabric and immediately envisioned exactly what you wanted to make, only to realize halfway through the planning process that the fabric had other ideas? That’s exactly what happened with this project. I used Fabric Mart’s Black/Dark Cobalt/Smoky White Poly Foliage Print Chiffon , and while I initially had plans for a detailed dress, the fabric ultimately led me in a completely different direction—and I’m so glad it did. When I first saw this gorgeous chiffon print, I was immediately drawn to the rich color palette and beautiful movement. The dark background paired with the cobalt and smoky white foliage creates a striking look that feels both dramatic and versatile. My original plan was to make a dress with princess seams, buttons, and more structured design elements. Sewing With Intention: New Look 6106 and a More Coordinated Wardrobe

Sometimes a sewing project begins with a beautiful piece of fabric or a pattern you just have to make. This one began with my closet. Recently, I did a major closet purge. I took a good look at what I actually wear, what I kept reaching for, and—maybe more importantly—what was missing. Once the pieces I no longer loved or wore were gone, something became very clear: I want to be more intentional about what I sew next. Instead of sewing individual pieces that I love but don't necessarily wear together, I want to build a wardrobe where my handmade garments coordinate with the clothes I already own—and with the pieces I'm planning to sew next. For this month's Fabricista project, this beautiful lightweight shirting from Fabric Mart turned out to be a wonderful place to start.
