Fabricista Fashion Challenge 3 Announced! Looking for Bloggers

Attention Sewing Bloggers! We’re looking for 6 enthusiastic sewing bloggers to participate in the Fabricista Fashion Challenge 3! What is this you may ask? This is a 5-week sewing challenge where you will be given a weekly project to complete to the best of your abilities. Each week will have a criteria for judging and will be judged by some of your favorite personalities in the sewing industry.

All the Details:
The entire sewing time for the challenge will run from September 11-October 14. A new challenge will be posted to the public every Friday morning, with the first one being Friday, September 11th. You will have until the following Tuesday night to submit your entries, so that on Wednesday morning I can post the finished projects.

There will be a total of 4 challenges and they will be posted on: Friday, Sept 11, 18, 25, October 2 (the last week challengers will have 2 weeks to complete.)

Judging: Each week, you will be given a set of criteria. This will change slightly each week but usually will include fit, quality, craftsmanship and creativity. Each week there will be at least one "Celebrity Judge" on the panel. (I'm working on trying to get two each week!) Along with myself, we will chat about how each person met the criteria and select a winner of the challenge. We will also have a Viewers Choice voting which the winner will be given a prize.

Reader Participation: Last year we introduced Reader Participation on Flickr. This year, we won't be doing it on Flickr, but having you share it on social media using #fabricistafashionchallengereader. Each week, post photos of your progress and completed challenges. We will choose one winner each week to win a prize! (Prize TBA, closer to the date. Only open to citizens of US and Canada, for shipping purposes.)

Fun All Around! This challenge is for the fun in it (and winning some prizes on top of it) for participants, readers, judges and myself! It is definitely hard to choose the "best" in the group, especially because we are doing everything through photographs and periodic written responses. So we're looking for participants that are good sports about a fun challenge that will expand your sewing abilities!

Do you think you have what it takes to participate in the Fabricista Fashion Challenge III? If you answered yes, email us your submission, fabricmartblog[@]gmail.com! Here's what we need from you:

- A link to your blog's homepage
- 3 images of current sewing projects
- A short paragraph telling us why you think you would be a great candidate for the challenge.

All challenges will be based on sewing for yourself, so keep that in mind when entering. You must be able to participate during the entire challenge (September 10-October 14). Sorry, previous challenge contestants will not be considered. While we would love you to participate, we would like to give other fabulous sewists a chance too! Open to citizens of the US and Canada (due to shipping you things for the challenges and risk of it not getting to you in time.) Entries are due by Tuesday, August 18th!

Made by a Fabricista: Spring is for Shirtdress

I love shirt dresses! My pattern collection reflects this (I may or may not have eight shirt dress patterns) but somehow my closet does not. I have just two DIY shirt dresses (Mimi G's Katie dress and Simplicity 8546) and maybe two RTW versions. So it's high time that I added some to my wardrobe.

This polyester blouse weight twill by Milly has the perfect weight and drape for a relaxed shirt dress. If you prefer a more structured look, stick to a cotton shirting or light weight sateen. I loved this fabric and print so much that I grabbed both colorways. Unfortunately this fabric is sold out, but you can browse other shirtings and blouse weight fabrics here.

This fabric has a somewhat slinky feel, but isn't truly slippery. There's also a slight sheen without being shiny like a satin. It was easy to cut and sew, but I did get a few snags when pinning so make sure you use sharp pins and a fresh machine needle. I serged my pieces before assembling the pattern because as m…

Fabricista Guest Post: "Julie's Picks" Goes to the Opera

Hello, fellow fabric enthusiasts and sewers alike ! My name is Mary Martha and I am thrilled to be presenting a guest post for Fabric Mart's Fabricista blog. As a bit of background, I fell madly in love with opera in 2015 when I attended my first performance in a movie theater as part of the Metropolitan Opera's "Live in HD" simulcasts, which projects live staged operas in New York City into cinemas worldwide via satellite. (They're fantastic !) Since the start, I have dressed the part of the characters when attending these performances, beginning with outfits fashioned from scarves and skirts in my mother's closet to more ornate costumes. It was during this time that I taught myself to sew using a sewing machine and I haven't looked back ─ my life was changed forever !
In December 2018, I subscribed to Julie's Picks swatch club as an educational experience: I wanted to expand my knowledge of different fabrics besides the typical polyester satins I h…
