Third place will receive: $50 gift certificate to spend at Fabric Mart, plus a Julie's Picks Membership. (A $100 value.)

The Challenge:
This week's challenge is all about finding your inner designer. Select a designer that you are most inspired by and create a total look that could fit into their Fall/Winter 2016 collection. Think of it like Ralph Lauren just called you and said they need one more look for their runway show and they chose you!

(Left to Right: Tory Burch, Dries Van Noten, Versace, Tracy Reese)

Think outside the box while still creating something that you will wear with you lifestyle. You can make just one garment, but if you feel that creating more than one will help you portray your favorite designer, then do so. (Such as a shirt and skirt combo, etc.)

Vogue has a wonderful library of fashion shows going all the way back to 1991! See their website HERE

Other Requirements:
- Tell us about why you picked the designer and how you are inspired by them.
- How will this garment fit into your lifestyle?
- Submit up to 8 photos. They can be collaged.

We will be judging on a 1-10 scale (10 being the highest) using the following criteria:

Creativity - Did you think of original ideas while still keeping in mind that the look should be inspired by a favorite designer?

Wearability - Did you make something that will fit into your lifestyle? Did you tell us how it will?

Fit –
Does your garment(s) proportionately fit you? No pulling in common fit-issue areas such as crotch, bust, shoulders, etc?

Craftsmanship - Did you put a lot of care into the construction? Top-stitching straight, seams match, careful overall construction, etc? The hemline is straight? The garments do not look messy or rushed?

Presentation - While we totally understand not everyone has a professional camera and the perfect backdrop for photographing their creations, (Me included!!) you are in front of a world of other sewers. Make yourself look presentable. Submit a photo of the front, back and side view of the garment. Detail photos are also requested so we can be better judges. So if you do some embellishing or a specific technique, zoom in and share with us! Not all the photos may be used in the blog post, but for judges reference.

Judges: This week's judges are Deepika from Pattern Review, Angela Wolf from Angela Wolf Designs and the social media team from Nancy's Notions: Emily Jansson and Lindsay Cavens.

Angela Wolf is known for her pattern line, Angela Wolf Designs and online classes on Pattern Review and Craftsy.

Deepika started PatternReview.com in 2001 as a place for sewers to meet and discuss their sewing projects. Over the last 15+ years, the site has evolved into a global community with 350,000+ members in over 20 countries. Deepika taught herself to sew because she wanted to make curtains for her new home. 15 years and almost 300 garments later, she is still buying curtains!

Lindsay and Emily write all about the new product offerings for the Nancy's Notions catalog and website. They share a sweet little corner office that looks out into a larger hallway of their building. "The lack of an actual window may genuinely make us more creative—we put on nature sounds to listen to all day. Sometimes we're in the mood for Rainforest sounds, but when we're feeling uninspired, it's Peruvian flute, all day long—haha!" says Emily.

Due Date: You have a few extra days to finish this challenge! All photos, text, etc is due on Thursday, October 6th. The finished projects will be revealed for reader voting October  7-10 and the winner will be announced on Tuesday, October 11th!

  2. I am looking forward to this challenge more then any of the others. We get to see the participants inspirations and interpretations. I tried to pick my own designer of choice, even though I am arm-chairing it through this challenge. Who did you pick?

Made by a Fabricista: The Bernadette

Hello friends,  My Latest Fabricista Make: Friday pattern Co Bernadette Skirt x Midnight Navy Cotton/Lycra Sateen Stretch Denim Hi everyone, this is Byrd with my latest Fabricista make! When I saw Fabric Mart’s Muted Midnight Navy Cotton/Lycra Sateen Stretch Denim , I knew it would be perfect for my next project. The color is rich and versatile—a deep navy that works as a neutral but still has presence. The stretch denim has just the right balance: structure with a bit of give, making it great for a garment that needs both shape and comfort. It’s an ideal fabric for fall transitions, but it’s sturdy enough to carry straight into winter with tights and boots. For the pattern, I chose the Bernadette Skirt by Friday Pattern Company . This is one of their newer designs, and I knew immediately I wanted to sew it up. It’s a modern skirt that blends structure and style, with darts in the back and pleats in the front for a flattering fit. One of my favorite features is the belt, and of co...

Made By A Fabricista: The Friday Pattern Company Westcliff Dress pattern

Have I just sewn my new favorite Maxi dress for the Fall? Friday Pattern Company patterns are one of my favorite to sew and wear.  I have fun sewing up their patterns and they turn out so beautifully. The Westcliff is a top and dress pattern for knit lovers. I love wearing knit but sewing knit is not my favorite. The pattern features: A faux-wrap bodice with full coverage and a neckline designed not to gape! Two cup size options (B and D cup) for better bust fit.  A flowy A-line skirt, with an optional lower tier to convert it into a maxi. The pattern is written for knits with at least ~25% stretch.  I selected a very soft jersey knit from Fabric Mart that has large scale flowers in brown and pink. The instructions are clear, there are many helpful tips for sewing knit included. The faux-wrap style is flattering and relatively easy to wear, especially in a comfortable stretchy knit. Overall, for knit garment sewing, thi...

Made By A Fabricista: One Pattern => Three Fabrics => Three Looks!

Hello sewing friends! Today I’m sharing three totally different looking tops I made from the same pattern where the only difference in approach was the fabric itself. If I hadn’t shared with you that these three tops were all made with similar options in same exact size…would you have known they all came from the same pattern? Read on, and let me know in the comments! First, the pattern – this is the Ellie & Mac Fall in Love sweater. I’ve had this pattern for ages and it’s been a tried and true for me over the years. I think the first time I sewed it up was back in 2018. It’s a great beginner pattern due to a few features:  1) Relaxed fit – it’s meant to be oversized so you don’t have to nail your exact measurements.  2) Not a ton of pattern pieces and limited options – it’s a basic sweater/sweatshirt so no wondering if you cut the right neckband for the right neckline 3) No hemming! If you sew the pattern as designed (which I did in one of the three options), it com...
