Skirt Challenge Inspiriation

Are you as excited as I am to begin the Skirt Challenge?! With the help of the Fabric Mart Fabricista bloggers and some special guest bloggers, I have scheduled an entire month full of skirt projects and inspiration.

 To start it off, I thought it would be fun to give you some visual inspiration. I scoured Pinterest for my favorite skirt designs - both RTW and DIY projects. Click HERE or the photo below to see the entire collection!


If you missed the first post announcing the Skirt Challenge, here's the details again:

Post a photo of a skirt you made on Instagram OR Facebook using #sewcoolskirts and tag Fabric Mart in your post. Then each week in May, we will pick a winner at random to win a $50 gift certificate to Fabric Mart! There's also a few other prizes that will pop up, so watch for more details! 

 The skirt must be handmade but doesn't have to be made during the month. The photos tagged must be posted in the month of May. Sorry, no backdating or tagging an old post. We encourage newly made skirts because it's just more fun that way! (But not required.) 

 Winners of the $50 gift certificates will be announced on May 8, 15, 22 & 29. There will also be other prizes available and we will announce what they will be at a later time. 

Watch our Instagram and Facebook pages for real-time inspiration! I'll be wearing some of my favorite skirts to help keep you inspired! In the meantime, get sewing and get posting!

    I've only made one skirt (Mabel by Colette patterns) and it was a fiasco. So much so I never made another...I save the pattern though because I do love this pattern but getting it right on me turned out to be more challenging than I ever would have believed. The other pattern I really like is the Vientiane Skirt by Itch to Stitch. I don't have this pattern yet but I keep returning to it - I just resist PDFs to be honest :)

      Hi Kathleen, I'm sorry you had such trouble with your first skirt! You might want to try Pamela's Patterns Magic Pencil Skirt. It's very simple and similar in style to the Mabel skirt. I'll have to check out the skirt from Itch to Stitch!

    I am pear shaped and still 40 lbs overweight. Would love to make and wear a skirt or summer dress but have never found a style that is flattering on me. I'm working on the weight thing. Down 35 . My reward for myself when i get to 150 is I will get myself a quality dress form ! In the meantime am sticking to tops. If anyone knows of a skirt that would be flattering for a overweight pear I'd try it !

    Hi Kathy,

    I think circle skirts are VERY flattering on pear shapes! Actually, I think circle skirts look great on women of all shapes and sizes, and they are so fun to make and wear. I actually entered one I made for this challenge.

      Upload a photo of your skirt on your Facebook page and "tag us" by putting @FabricMart. That will tag us. Also include #sewcoolskirts in the wording and we will be able to find it. I hope this helps!

Return to work wardrobe in ITY – which is your favorite?

In June of this year, after spending nearly 11 years at my place of employment and after restructuring and cost cutting, I took a separation package. I was so fortunate to be able to take a few months off, and also to very quickly find a position with a new company. Office Attire to Remember

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to contribute to Fabricista blog once more! I made another brand new cosplay: Reiko Kujirai from Kowloon Generic Romance! Kowloon Generic Romance is a sci-fi, romance & mystery manga series. It was later adapted to a TV anime and live action film! This series takes place in Kowloon Walled City. It’s about a woman named Reiko Kujirai who suffers from memory loss and doesn't remember her past. She works at a realty estate management company with her co-worker Hajime Kudou, a very easy going and brash man who’s also her crush! Reiko lives her life in Kowloon, while also trying to discover who she is, and the mysteries of this city (I will not spoil everything! You’re going to have to check it out for yourself!). I binged the anime in one day and really enjoyed it. The story and the characters are very intriguing. I love that the main characters are in their 30s, which is very rare in anime! Double Back

Have you ever used a fabric that you loved so much you had to buy more and make it again.  I can only think of a handful of times that I’ve done that as I am very much a use it all for one project type of person.  However after I first used this snakeskin print stretch twill I knew I needed more of it. It started off when I decided to make this dress for my upcoming high school reunion. I loved the fabric even more in person. When I was playing around with the dress I envisioned making pants with it as well in the future.  I was able to order some matching thread and zippers to complete my dress look. Then I ordered 5 more yards to give myself a second look.  I love to use Pinterest to help me gather my ideas. Foray into Shirtmaking

I love playing with volume and texture! I've always loved well-made shirts: the soft yet crisp fabric, the structure and tailored fit. I love the deceptive simplicity that tries to conceal the precision and details that go into their construction…everything about well-made shirts is fascinating. And despite my interest, I somehow never really owned one. Let’s change that! I took my time with the finishing touches. I decided to bury my nose in a couple of David Page Coffin books on shirtmaking and became even more determined to try my hand at sewing one for myself. Everything I read about shirtmaking emphasized the need for really good fabric, so this 100% cotton shirting was a no-brainer (SKU: DMC 5116). I mean, look at those stripes! It's incredibly soft and light, with lots of body and a voluminous drape. It holds its shape remarkably well, and it was a delight to press.
