Made By A Fabricista: Unfrumping My Sleepwear with Pretty Little PJ Sets

Hello Sewing Friends!

I’m excited to be back on the Fabricista Blog to share my latest projects with you all. I’m on a mission to unfrump my pajama collection and here are two sets to get me started on the journey. 

Now, I have some nice pjs but they are clearly pjs. They aren’t something that I can pop on a meeting wearing or leave the house wearing. I want to add some pjs to my sleepwear wardrobe that really sort of look like clothes. So they needed to be comfortable enough to sleep in but be pretty about and have style features that weren’t typical of pjs. 

I pulled two patterns from my collection. And as you can see, they are not pj patterns but are clothing patterns. 

I selected knit fabrics from Fabric Mart Fabrics that would be soft and comfortable to sleep in. 

The red solid fabric is a sweater knit that I would wear outside for sure. The floral knit is one that I love as it’s pretty and bold. 

I was able to cut three pieces from the red floral: pants, a top and a cardigan. These three pieces are all very comfortable and will actually mix and match with a lot in my closet. 

I used New Look 6581 for the pants and McCall’s 7331 for the top and cardigan. Modifications that I made included cropping the pants, and I made the t-shirt sleeveless. I did not face the cardigan as instructed by the pattern as I did not have enough fabric. So I simply served the edge and hemmed it. I will remake this and will do the facing as I think it will hang even better that way. 



As for the floral set, I used the New Look pattern to make both pieces. The wrap dress is my robe! I used some vintage velvet trim for the belt. And I cropped the pants again. 



I absolutely love all five pieces that I made. And I love how they mix and match. I will be making more items with some Fabric Mart Fabrics knits. I just love these pieces that I can sleep in. Or just through on when I’m not going out but want to feel dressed. I’m extended the year of cozy right in to 2022!

    I love love love this idea, to use clothing patterns for pjs you feel comfortable in wearing out in OR sleeping in. Your new clothes totally accomplish that feat with panache! Great fabric and design choices too.

Denim is definitely one of my favorite fabrics to wear during the fall, more than any other season. I'm sharing my first denim project for Fall 2023 in this months Fabricista feature because let's be real, its one of the most iconic fabrics ever, its always in style and most everything can be made with denim. This denim is Fabric Marts Deep Prussian Blue 100% Cotton Denim, and it was the perfect fabric for this project. I really enjoyed working with this denim. Made By A Fabricista: Just Wear It Out!

Originally I wasn’t happy with my make this time around. I put it on fresh off the sewing machine and didn’t love how it fit. My elastic was slightly too narrow for what the pattern called for. I did end up putting a stitch to close up the v-neck on the top. I thought my sewing on the waistband looked sloppy and I looked kind of frumpy in the outfit. I was going to put the project down to fix later but decided to wear it out for some feedback from our web manager and one of the describers.  I ended up pleasantly surprised! The fabric is super comfortable and I felt really good wearing it. All the things I didn’t like kind of melted away wearing it out. The flaws were so small that only I noticed them. I think it’s important to remember that while striving for perfect seams and flawless construction is good, a handmade garment doesn’t have to be perfect to be wearable.
