Made By A Fabricista: Summer Brunch looks just in time for Mother’s Day

Happy First Friday of May! I am truly excited that I have 22 more work days left before the summer break. This school year has been a roller coaster ride and I have enjoyed some high moments and dealt with some low ones in between. I wanted to start my summer looks early and decided to focus on looks I can wear when I visit Jamaica or other tropical places. These looks made are both great for Sunday brunch as well.

This set is my first faux romper for this year and I love the fact that I can rock it as separates. When I came across this yellow graphite gray polyester fabric, I knew it was perfect for summer. To top it off, I found the perfect matching earring from Purple Paradise Studio in lime (Rise stud in lime) and knew I wanted a chic summer faux romper set.

I decided to hack McCalls 7943 dress pattern and create another top. I have made it several times as I truly love it and plan to use this pattern as one of the beginner patterns for my summer sewing class. I have made it 3 times as a dress and 3 tops and each time that I make it, I have had some aha moments.

For the shorts, I went back to my summer shorts pattern which I have made several times. I hacked Vogue 1708 jumpsuit romper pattern and created shorts. I adjusted it to fit my body type by slashing and spreading it a few inches starting from the center keeping in mind not to slash the crotch area to avoid having an excessive amount of fabric.

I like the fact that this can be made with any fabric and still fits well. Moreover, I can not resist creating an elastic waistband and adding pockets to my pants or shorts. Having an elastic waist garment allows me to still wear it when I gain or lose an inch or two around my waist area.

I have been wanting to create a tropical set for brunch here in Miami and could not resist this fabric I found and purchased in January. I was on the fence about whether to create a cute dress or set. After much thought, I knew I couldn’t resist making a set because I can rock the top separate with jeans and the pants with a classic white top and a denim jacket. Hands down this is one of my favorite sets for the books and I love the fitted top as the fabric has stretch.

I honestly was also dreaming of a tropical vacation brunch when I sewed this up. The top is made using the Newlook 6678 pattern that I made in my last blog post here and the pants pattern is Simplicity 8605.

I am super happy that I created both sets just in time for the summer months. I am learning to make pieces that fit my personal taste and lifestyle and are flattering on my body. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to check out my Instagram page to see what is up next on my sewing table.

Made By A Fabricista: The Sheer Volume Of It All!

This garment was inspired by a dress I saw in an ad, and when I went to purchase it (which I rarely do)…I realized that the dress didn’t come in my size. Ticked off and with $300 back in my pocket, I decided to draft it myself. The description listed the fabrication as a silk cotton voile, so I used that as a starting point to recreate the simple yet elegant silhouette. My drafting experience is limited; I’ve only ever made garments that are pleated rectangles that fit into an elasticated waist. No darts, no complicated calculations, and definitely no sleeves. But I’d have that dress if it’s the last thing I do! I made a drawing, created a Pinterest board to document my inspiration, and narrowed down the features I really wanted to have: billowy bubble-hemmed bishop sleeves (say it three times fast!), a fitted and lined bodice, and a gathered tiered skirt. Made By A Fabricista: In Love with Linen

Linen is the best fabric to sew and wear. I selected a beautiful 100% linen from Fabric Mart that is a steel blue and cream floral linen to sew up a By Hand London Hannah Wrap Dress pattern. The flowers look like Dahlias. I originally sewed a Toile from a black and white cotton bedsheet, wore the dress a lot but never made it again. I gave the Toile away to a friend who always commented on how much she loved the dress. When I saw this fabric, I knew I wanted to make the Hannah again. Linen is so easy to sew the entire experience reminded me why linen remains one of my favorite fabrics to sew. I look for a light to medium weight European linen for a dress. I like a rayon or cotton blend with linen because it seems to have more drape and be more soft. Linen gets softer with washing and wearing it. Made By A Fabricista: Blouse with a Unique Neckline? McCall’s 8658 Is It!

Hi everyone, this is Byrd with my latest Fabricista make! If you’re looking for a polished, structured blouse that works just as well dressed up as it does dressed down, this one is definitely worth a look. I’m sewing up McCall’s 8658, View B, part of the Spring 2026 pattern collection, and I paired it with Fabric Mart’s charcoal cotton poplin by Robert Kaufman. I was initially drawn to this pattern because of its unique neckline and tailored feel, and I knew right away that a crisp poplin would give me the structure I wanted. This blouse is semi-fitted and full of thoughtful design details that really elevate it. The neckline is a standout, featuring a collar and collar band paired with a front button closure. I especially love the shape of the front hem and the way it opens slightly - it adds movement without being overdone.
