Made By A Fabricista: FROM FABRIC TO FASHION: - The Saguaro Set with Fabric Mart Fabric

The weather in Southwest Florida is finally starting to warm up.  With the warm air and bright sunshine, I have been thinking about refreshing my “at home” wardrobe with some fun easy pieces this year.     I have wanted to make The Saguaro Set for some time now.   When I saw the beautiful selection of rayon challis on the Fabric Mart website, I knew now was the perfect time to get it started.

THE FABRIC

I researched a lot to see which fabric would work the best for this pattern.   I chose the Deep Amaranth Pink 100% Rayon Twill Challis for my project.    It is a beautiful color that to me looks more coral. The fabric is light to medium weight and has beautiful drape.  The care instructions said gentle wash or hand wash.   I prewashed the fabric in cold water on the delicate cycle.  However, after drying it on the delicate cycle, the fabric had an almost vintage distressed look.   I was a bit concerned, but as I began to layout the pattern, I liked the overall look. (Whew, so glad that worked out)

I would recommend to anyone interested in getting this fabric to prewash a small piece first to make sure you like the finished look of the fabric.

THE PATTERN

The Saguaro Set is a relaxed easy fit top with elastic.  The pants are high waisted with elastic and drawstring.   Both pieces are easy to cut and sew.   I recommend checking your measurement size with the finished garment measurements located on the pattern.  The pattern comes from size XS to size 7X.  There are websites and tutorials to help with construction and adjustments.  The only adjustment I made was to the length of the pants.   Next time I may raise the neckline crossover.  The ties do a great job of giving a bit of coverage.  I plan to wear this only at home or perhaps over a bathing suit by the pool.    I think another Saguaro Set in a tropical print would be beautiful.   There are several beautiful tropical prints rayon challis on the Fabric Mart website that I already have placed in the shopping cart.

THE PROCESS

The sewing process was easy. There are no special closures, buttons, or zippers on this one.  This pattern and fabric would be great for a confident beginner to sew.  Again, I would recommend washing a small piece of fabric to make sure you are happy with the fabric finish.   I used a fresh needle for this project.   When pressing I used a warm iron and pressing cloth with no steam.   The fabric seemed to like that better.   Sewing this set was fun.  There are two rows of top stitching on the elastic bands of the top and waistband which is a fun detail.

THE FINISHED LOOK

At first I thought I might be too old to wear this.   But I love the finished look!   I love that it looks great with low heel sandals or sparkly flip flops.   The pieces can be worn together or separately.  The top can also be worn with the V neckline to the back.  Two piece sets are on trend this year.  This one is  easy to wear.   I am pleased with the fit and dare I say….I feel pretty in it.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This was a fun easy pattern and I will sew it again in a tropical print fabric I have already chosen from Fabric Mart. At the time of this writing, the Amaranth Pink Rayon Twill Challis is still available.   I really liked this fabric for this pattern.  Check out  Fabric Mart Fabrics  great fabric selection and prices for your next spring top, dress, or trendy two-piece set.

  4. If something looks this good on a person, then they're not too old to wear it, and you look great in it! I have a piece of sueded silk and that's what this rayon challis twill reminds me of - it has some variation in it; I think it is a very nice look for a fabric - it adds depth, dimension and interest. Beautiful set!

Made By A Fabricista: Sewing Summery ITY

Hi sewing friends! I’m dropping in to share a few makes sewn with ITY fabrics and inspire you to try out this slinky, cool-to-the-touch fabric for hot weather if you haven’t yet, or to recommend some patterns that work fabulously if you already love it. This is by far my favorite knit to wear in summer. Since it moves easily there’s lots of airflow, and it just skims the body. More often than not, it has a four-way stretch that doesn’t grow when worn, so it works great for loads of styles.  ITY stands for Interlock Twist Yarn and the knit gives it some wonderful drape and stretch. There are lots of different weights and even some differing textures. Because it’s so fluid, the fabric really resists most wrinkling. I’ve sewn three different weights and prints here to show off just what ITY can do!  This white floral is a lighter weight and features a slightly crepe-textured finish, and I think that combined with the large and spread-out floral makes it quite elegant and eye-cat...

Made By A Fabricista: Effortless ITY

Clothing made from  ITY  (Interlock Twist Yarn) fabric is effortless, almost like wearing secret pajamas. It is silky and cool to the touch, with a beautiful drape and amazing stretch. ITY fabric is incredibly versatile, and some of the best dresses, skirts, and athletic wear I’ve owned are made from it. Thanks to Fabric Mart’s recent influx of unique ITY fabrics, I was inspired to add some additional ITY items to my wardrobe.  I found two beautiful ITY fabrics on the Fabric Mart site that stopped me in my tracks. The first fabric I loved was a funky off-white and multi-color flora and fauna print from a New York Designer. I ordered two yards of this print with a top in mind. Next, I saw a beautiful  ITY fabric panel  featuring off-white and blue floral print. I’m usually hesitant to buy fabric panels without a plan of how to use them, but I threw caution to the wind this time. I ordered 5 panels, hoping that would give me more than enough fabric to showcase the...

Made By A Fabricista: Matching Sets Are Always a Win for Me

I think I might have a problem.  I’m obsessed with a good matching set. Matching Sets can be considered as a coordinated chic look. A perfectly paired top and bottom that creates a seamless, stylish look with minimal effort. I think that’s exactly what I did.  Usually when I’m looking for fabric, I try to have something in mind of what I’m going to make with it. Well, I’m here to report that I totally forgot what pattern I was going to use for this beautiful fabric. I believe I had a dress in mind, but I couldn’t remember the pattern for the life of me.  The fabric I chose is called Indian red dandelion soft lavender flower poplin shirting .  I’ve used poplin from Fabric Mart several times and it’s always a win for me. I went through several different patterns for the top, until I landed on the Sara Top from Fibre Mood. I’ve had this top in my stash for so many years, and I thought it would be great for this fabric. This pattern is basically 2 rectangles with a chann...
