Made By A Fabricista: Getting into the Spirit of Summer

I'm not gonna lie y'all, I had a completely different project I wanted to do, but that's gonna take more time, and I wanted something cute, comfy and fun to wear for my birthday on the 19th.

When I saw this goldenrod & off white linen jacquard, I thought it looked a bit like the design on a Koroks body, especially Makar from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker!

I started with the bodice from the free Elderberry dress pattern from Mood, but deviated for the skirt, it felt a little plain of a design, and I had scraps of a Korok fabric that I knew would be a nice accent with some cut out pockets.

I've made these pockets once before, deciding the cut out was based on aligning with the seam on the bodice for how far in, and as for how low depended on where I wanted the pouch of the pocket to start. From there I cut the visible part of the pocket, making sure to match the curve of the waist and following the line of the side seams of the skirt, as well as cutting a facing to finish the cut curve and make the other half of the pocket.

To give the bodice a little more structure and me some modesty, I chose to line it with some of the left over cotton from my Nene Yashiro cosplay I made back in January. Unfortunately for this, I wasn't able to avoid my nemesis; the zipper. I sewed it in to the outer layer by machine, but I like to finish the lining by hand to avoid visible top stitching.


Once the dress was sewn, I used some leftover green apple linen from my Ren faire outfit, some felt, and scraps of black linen, I made Makars leaf mask, and yes I can see through the eyes, or at least one eye at a time lol

Then I took advantage of my last over scraps to make a little Makar plushie! I followed the pattern from Sew Desu Ne to assemble him, which was very quick and easy, but added some extra stitches and gathered his back dart seam to give him a little defined booty!

This project was so fun, and I'm excited to add something nerdy to my daily wardrobe!

    Beautiful fabric! Happy Birthday - you made a wonderful dress for your special day! My son used to love the Legend of Zelda - I had forgotten about that happy memory - hope your birthday provides happy memories for you!

Made By A Fabricista: A Fresh Take on a Classic Shirt Dress

Summer has arrived! That means longer days, soaring temps, and the perfect excuse for me to add another linen garment to my wardrobe.  Lightweight linen and summer weather just go together, don’t you agree? That’s why I choose this striped linen for my next Fabricista make. Hello Sewing Friends! It’s Sharon from Sharon Sews ready to share my summer dress with you.  The tiny blue and white stripes combined with navy buttons give it a bit of coastal charm, while the details make it anything but a traditional shirt dress.  The fabric is a Ralph Lauren 100% shirt weight linen. The stripes are so small that from a distance the fabric almost looks like a solid color. When you find the perfect summer dress pattern that also happens to be 100% bump-friendly, you don't just celebrate—you immediately plan to make it in every single color of the rainbow. At least, that’s the executive decision I made after sewing my first Tilly and the Buttons Mabel Dress for the Fabricista Blog. Made By A Fabricista: Art In Motion

Hello Sewing Friends! It’s Tira from TIRACOOKS and I am so excited to share this project with you. When I first spotted this fabric, I was drawn in by how stunning it looked it reminded me of a living art piece. Then, when I looked closer, I noticed painted hanging plants in the print, which made it even more special. This fabric is one of my all-time favorites: chiffon. It cuts so smoothly, and the best part? Any wrinkles come out effortlessly with a steamer. Before cutting into anything, fabric prep is essential! Chiffon must be prewashed by hand in cold water with a gentle detergent or baby shampoo. Always serge or zigzag stitch the raw edges to prevent fraying. Submerge and gently swirl the fabric to wash never wring or twist it then air dry flat. I used a 70/10 needle in my Juki DDL, which is perfect for lightweight fabrics, alongside my Juki overlock machine.
