If you’ve seen our recent posts on Facebook or Instagram you
might know that I love gingham.
Gingham, check plaid, any plaid really. But I also have very little of it in my actual wardrobe. So I set out to fix that today.
I’m using two free patterns to make this cute matching set. Seamwork’s Hansie top and Rosery Apparel’s free shorts pattern.
I’ve made one other Seamwork pattern before and it was pretty cropped. Even after I lengthened it. I’ve heard that a lot of their top patterns tend to be cropped. So I lengthened the shirt by two inches.
I’m getting used to my serger now too!
The shorts are an elasticated waist boxer short style. They’re super comfy, but definitely run a bit big. And if you’re doing the inseam pockets, I would suggest moving the placement up an inch or so. The bottom of these babies hang right at the bottom of the shorts, so they’re sometimes visible. What you should definitely NOT do is use your brand new used serger to chop an inch off the bottom after the pockets are in, accidentally serging off the bottom corner in of one of the legs in the process. It definitely isn’t what I did.
(I threw a patch on it and called it a day)
After trying on the make I decided I didn’t like the added length for the top. It was just kinda boring. I ended up cutting almost 4 inches off to make it even more cropped than the original pattern called for. Go figure.
(My assistant thought so too)
I also cut two of the pocket piece out, but only needed one for the shirt so I put the other pocket on the back of the shorts!
All in all these two patterns are super beginner friendly and I highly recommend making them! Janelle has a great YouTube tutorial for her shorts, and the Seamwork pattern instructions are super clear and easy to follow. I love when a pattern tells you when to finish off seams!
I hope you all have a gingham-full day! See you next time!
