Hi everyone, this is Byrd with my latest Fabricista make!
If you’re looking for the perfect handmade piece for spring and summer travel, these just might be it.
This time around I’m sewing up the Burnside Bibs by Sew House Seven using Fabric Mart’s gorgeous Aquamarine/Umber Brown 100% Cotton Floral Artisan Batiks Jungle Dreams by Robert Kaufman. From the moment I saw this fabric, I was completely drawn in by the colors. The combination of aquamarine, brown, and cream feels both earthy and vibrant, making it perfect for warm weather sewing. I immediately knew it would make an incredible spring or summer garment. I’m a longtime fan of Robert Kaufman fabrics and always appreciate the quality and artistry behind the prints. As always, and especially because this is 100% cotton, I gave the fabric a thorough wash and dry before cutting into it. Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way over the years that addressing potential shrinkage before sewing is always worth the extra time.
This blouse is semi-fitted and full of thoughtful design details that really elevate it. The neckline is a standout, featuring a collar and collar band paired with a front button closure. I especially love the shape of the front hem and the way it opens slightly - it adds movement without being overdone. The back is where a lot of the shaping happens, with double-ended darts that give a beautiful, contoured fit. The sleeves are gathered at the sleeve head and finished with bias binding, which gives them a soft but polished look.
When I first purchased this fabric, I was convinced it was destined to become a breezy summer dress with skinny straps. But once I got it home and spent some time feeling the fabric and studying the print, I realized I wanted to make something a little different. That’s when I remembered the Burnside Bibs. I made this pattern a few years ago and absolutely loved wearing them, and the more I looked at the batik print, the more convinced I became that the two would be a perfect match. The structure of the pattern paired beautifully with the movement and visual interest of the fabric.
One thing worth noting about the Burnside Bibs is that you’ll want to pay close attention when choosing your version and cutting your pattern pieces. The instruction booklet includes four different options, and there is definitely room to mix and match features if you’re feeling creative. I chose Version 1 with the side zipper and full-length legs, although there is also a cropped option available. Using the size chart and finished garment measurements, I cut a size 18. The only adjustment I made was adding about a half inch to each side of the bib for a little extra coverage, and that was it. Not having to make additional fit adjustments is a big win for me. The instructions have you install the zipper on the left side, but since I’m right-handed, I moved it to the right side instead. It was an easy modification and one that makes the garment more comfortable for me to wear.
As far as skill level goes, I would consider this pattern an advanced beginner project, although it leans toward intermediate because of the construction details. The bib is self-lined, and some of the facing construction can be a little tricky the first time through. That said, if you’re comfortable installing an invisible zipper and willing to take your time, I think an advanced beginner could absolutely tackle it. The Sew House Seven instructions do a great job of walking you through the invisible zipper installation step by step, which makes the process much less intimidating.
Overall, I couldn’t be happier with how these turned out. The fit is comfortable, the fabric is absolutely stunning, and the finished garment feels both practical and fun to wear. Best of all, they were completed just in time to make their way into my suitcase for an upcoming family vacation to Switzerland and Amsterdam. I have a feeling these bibs are going to get plenty of wear while exploring new cities.
