I can’t believe the summer is over. Where did it go? I feel like school just let out for the summer and its already October! I may or may not have a few more summer projects I want to get done. We still have some time before it starts getting cold in South Florida.
I usually have a pattern or fabric in mind for my Fabric Mart makes, but I didn’t this time. I started looking for inspiration on Instagram and I came across this super cute jacket pattern and I purchased it.
I purchased the Modella Pattern KITTY pattern. Kitty is a raglan, unlined, spring jacket. As soon as I saw this pattern I fell in love. It looks like it’s from the Adidas line that was released in Japan. The jacket is very sporty and I love the design details.
The pattern is written in Turkish, but it is also translated in English. Based on my body measurements, I put together and cut a size 2XL. I could have honestly made an XL or maybe even a Large. After I put the pattern together and cut out all my pattern pieces, I started looking for the written instructions. Low and behold, the pattern did not have written instructions. There was a QR code to a tutorial and when I started watching it, it was in Turkish. At that point, I started to panic a little bit. I had a lightbulb moment and turned on the closed captions and they were in English! I was so relieved and I got to sewing.
As I mentioned, there were several design features that I was really drawn to when I saw the pattern and its design lines. The first detail I enjoyed was the pockets. I thought the way that they are sewn together is pretty cool and I’ve never made pockets like this before.
The first step in assembling the front pocket is to place the front top to the right side of the front bottom pattern piece and sew around and serge.
Another detail I really enjoyed was the sleeve. The sleeve is comprised of 3 pattern pieces – the sleeve front, sleeve (the middle piece) and the sleeve back. I purchased red pipping from my local fabric store, but unfortunately, I didn’t purchase enough because I didn’t write down how much I needed. That would have been a nice detail to add, but I really like how the sleeve comes together.
The last detail that I really enjoyed were the bows of course! I made my bows using red bias binding that I already had in my stash. It was wide single fold bias tape, so I cut it in ½, folded on it itself meeting both sides in the middle and then folding it again. Once that was done, I sewed very close to the edge. Below are photos of the process.
Once I decided on the pattern I was going to make, I headed on over to the Fabric Mart site to see what they had. Denim just happened to be on sale, and I was able to get this Twilight Navy Cotton/Lycra Stretch Denim fabric. The fabric is described as Medium/Heavy weight and has a great stretch. The jacket isn’t lined and I thought a single layer of this fabric would be medium weight and perfect for what I wanted it for. This jacket is going to be great during our South Florida Fall.
Would I make this pattern again, yes! I would size down and add some piping to the sleeve as I intended to. I think that would look so nice. Another idea would be to add stripped webbing to the sleeve. That would be cool too. Well, I hope you like my jacket as much as I do.
