Made by a Fabricista: Over-sized Full Length Wool Coat

It is no secret... coats, gloves, and the whole concept of laying is just-not-my THING.  Even though, I am originally from NY and now live in MD, somewhere along the way (living in FL) I began to deny winter until it was over.  In many ways, even today, the season I have the least amount of shoes, clothes, and outerwear is Winter.  Who likes winter anyway???? As a means to ramp up group activity and actually make an attempt to own a "functional" piece of outerwear, I began looking for inspiration for wool coats.  I found a great deal of short coats, but came across very few full length coats (light bulb moment).  I wanted something that would be stylish as well as functional for the cold temps.   The fabric I used for this coat is from Fabric Mart's Melton Wool coating collection ( HERE ).  The colors I used are no longer available, and I am sure its because the of the awesome 60% off sale that was going on, but there are some great selecti...

Made By A Fabricista: Winter Wedding

Happy New Year Fabricista's!  Weddings are always a great excuse for me to turn out a new dress and this past December I was in definite need of a new winter wedding appropriate frock. When considering appropriate colors and fabrics, I immediately thought of this gorgeous Maggy London sateen.  It was a Julie's Pick last year and I believe one of my first Julie's Pick purchases. The pictures hardly do the colors on this dress justice.  I tried two different times to take pictures with good lighting and the overcast winter weather beat me out both times!  So believe me when I say the colors on this dress are so saturated and gorgeous.  They put me in the mind of poinsettias. When thinking of winter weddings in the South I usually don't worry too much about the weather and if I will be warm enough (we have such mild winters) but this wedding was going to be outdoors.  So, I chose a little bit more coverage with a high neckline and sleeves.  I h...

Made by a Fabricista: Church Flow DIY Dress

[This outfit was made for and modeled by my daughter Mori] Hello 2017!!! We are going to start the year off with The "Church"  DIY Dress. That's what Mori calls this dress. I thought well since we are going with the whole Church Dress let's add some pearls! So I'm thinking this dress will not get a lot of air-time if you catch my drift. Now  you may remember the fabric that I used for the skirt because it was the same fabric I used for that beautiful jumpsuit below that Mori rocked this summer. Everybody loved that print and it was sold-out! [Black & White Rose Print100% Poly Ripstop Suiting is no longer available] I had a little yardage left in my stash for a rainy day. I fell in love when I saw this Pre-cut Vibrant Magenta Nylon/Lycra Suiting by Halston and I snatched up 4 yards in the hopes of making a suit. This fabric has a Scuba-like feel to it and I decided I didn't want pants out of this fabric.               ...

Made by a Fabricista: Have a Little Wine Velvet and Ring in the New Year

Hello!  Well, it’s that time of year when you start making resolutions to be or do things better in your life, whether that is lose weight, save money, travel, or love more.  Your resolutions may work out for the entire year or it may last for one month, nevertheless, a new year always brings the opportunity for a fresh start.  At least that is how I see it, so I always look forward to my 365 (or 366 leap year) restart of days, whether I am successful at my promises to myself or not.  Each year, I like to make vision boards for the things I want to accomplish during the year.  If there is something I didn’t accomplish but still aspire to do, I roll it over to the following year.  Last year, I started jotting down steps for achieving the things on my vision board and I continue to build on how I do them each year.  One of my goals this year is to really sew things that I love and are true to the things I envision myself wearing.  Though I ma...
