Made by a Fabricista: A Spring Wool Jacket

Hello Everyone, I am so excited to share my first make as a Fabric Mart Fabricista. As the weather starts to get warmer and the need for a heavy winter jacket ceases, I thought it would be nice to make a jacket for those cool spring days.

The Fabric.

I selected a mint green wool/nylon blend wool coating fabric. This fabric is a mid/heavy weight and could get thick once you add in interfacing and lining. I got 2.5 yards and it was perfect to make this short sleeve jacket. I pre-shrunk the wool using the wet towel and dryer method. The fabric presses well, but I didn’t apply steam directly onto it. I used a silk organza pressing cloth to avoid heat scorching.

The Pattern.

I selected Vogue 1758 from their winter/holiday collection. It’s loose-fitting lined jacket/vest with belt, different sleeves and length options. It also includes style details like patch pocket, cuffed sleeves and side slits. I made view A in a size 12 and the fit was great without any modifications. The only change I made was to cut a 4”x1.5” piece of the fabric to create a belt carrier and skipped the buttons/buttons hole to make the jacket into a wrap style.


The Sewing Process.

I used a cotton/poly blend fabric from my local fabric store for the lining. This is fully lined jacket so it did require a good amount of hand sewing (slip stitching) and bagging. The sleeves and the entire hemline is hand-stitched, I don’t mind doing it cos it gives it a clean and professional finish. The pattern instructions was pretty easy to follow but with every jacket pattern there are details like bagging and making a lapel collar. An advanced beginner or intermediate should be able to easily make the jacket following the instructions. Another thing to note is that once you add the interfacing and lining, it could get bulky. Just make sure the right needle (100/16 universal needle) and machine setting is used. Overall, it was a quick and easy make for me.

The Styling.

The jacket is a versatile piece that can be paired with various looks. I showed 2 ways of styling it. The 1st look is a casual take, paired the jacket on top of black jeans, sweater and sneakers look. The 2nd look is more dressy paired on top of  a brown neutral monochromatic sweater and pumps look.

    Love your new spring coat. It is a beautiful make that you are sure to enjoy all season. Really like how well it looks with both styles of dress which makes it a great item in your closet.

Return to work wardrobe in ITY – which is your favorite?

In June of this year, after spending nearly 11 years at my place of employment and after restructuring and cost cutting, I took a separation package. I was so fortunate to be able to take a few months off, and also to very quickly find a position with a new company. I start my new job on September 14th and I’m super excited!  This new position is also different for me in that it is local to my area (whereas before I worked remotely and traveled to the office every few weeks) – so I’ll be going into the office three times a week. So of course I needed to sew up some new outfits! I’m a huge fan of ITY knit fabric ; ITY stands for interlock twist yarn, which describes the way the yarn is knitted together. Double Back

Have you ever used a fabric that you loved so much you had to buy more and make it again.  I can only think of a handful of times that I’ve done that as I am very much a use it all for one project type of person.  However after I first used this snakeskin print stretch twill I knew I needed more of it. It started off when I decided to make this dress for my upcoming high school reunion. I loved the fabric even more in person. When I was playing around with the dress I envisioned making pants with it as well in the future.  I was able to order some matching thread and zippers to complete my dress look. Then I ordered 5 more yards to give myself a second look.  I love to use Pinterest to help me gather my ideas. Foray into Shirtmaking

I love playing with volume and texture! I've always loved well-made shirts: the soft yet crisp fabric, the structure and tailored fit. I love the deceptive simplicity that tries to conceal the precision and details that go into their construction…everything about well-made shirts is fascinating. And despite my interest, I somehow never really owned one. Let’s change that! I took my time with the finishing touches. I decided to bury my nose in a couple of David Page Coffin books on shirtmaking and became even more determined to try my hand at sewing one for myself. Everything I read about shirtmaking emphasized the need for really good fabric, so this 100% cotton shirting was a no-brainer (SKU: DMC 5116). I mean, look at those stripes!
