Made By A Fabricista: Fall Corduroy

Since the weather has gotten cooler I’ve been drawn to corduroy looks and getting inspiration from vintage seventies fashion to add more Fall pieces to my wardrobe. For this month's Fabricista feature I created the perfect two piece to set off my Fall looks. This corduroy from Fabric Mart is a bright turquoise blue and its medium weighted which makes it great for outerwear and bottom weighted pieces. I used two of my favorite patterns to create a complete look and added Fabric Mart’s printed satin to create a scarf to coordinate.

Trench jackets and wrap coats or a classic. Nothing says classic vintage like the iconic wrap and trench coat so I had to give into my whelms and create Simplicity 8554 view C. This jacket has a cool laid back polish look and this particular view has a tie at the wrist that creates an interesting ruffled hem cuff. It features two large pockets on the front, which I would usually skip or leave off for this look. I felt it added to the 70’s vibe and actually love the feature in this corduroy.

This piece was pretty easy to bring together. It is an unlined jacket yet it has the front flaps and large collars with front facing. This pattern called for silkier fabrics and even fabrics with a little more body but works so well with this corduroy fabric. This fabric sews up well, However be sure to cut all pieces in the same direction so that the grain and fabric runs in the same direction.

I'm always a fan of a good pair of bell bottom pants and I've been dying to create a corduroy pair. I used my favorite Vogue pattern 1640 to create these bell bottoms. They are a high waisted paneled design that  has always been a perfect fit no matter what fabric I create them in. I made adjustments to this pattern. However, I did at length to accommodate my height as I always do. The pants turned out even better than expected. There is no stretch in this corduroy so I was a little worried about the give in the hip and the thigh area but they are actually a great fit and very comfortable.

Love all the ways I can recreate looks with the separate pieces and the color is a great bold color to play with this Fall. It's not your usual Fall palette but who really sticks to Fall palettes anyway. It's all in how you wear the pieces.I’ve chosen a lightly faded printed satin fabric as a scarf accent to add to this look. I folded under the hem along the edges of this fabric to finish it. It is a double sided fabric and can be used to create a halter style look with the pants on warmer days, as a scarf on cooler days and even a head covering on windy mild days. There are so many ways to wear oversized scarves. I look forward to playing with it and re-creating many different looks with these pieces.

Until Next Time!

Made By A Fabricista: Turning the Page

We had a lovely, warm September in central New Jersey but as of last week, fall has finally started to set in. While I’m no longer operating on a school calendar, I always look forward to the return of fall, the crisp air, the colorful leaves, and the opportunity to “turn over a new leaf.” While exploring the Fabric Mart website, browsing all their gorgeous cottons, I was incredibly inspired by the Eggshell/Black 100% Cotton Horizontal Stripe Weave Lawn . It looks exactly like a lined piece of paper. I thought it would make a fun top for work during this transitional season, one that sparks “blank page” creativity. I wanted to pair the top with a simple yet classic pair of pants, allowing each piece to be a quality addition to my work and loungewear wardrobe, working together and as separates. I picked up the beautiful Midnight Navy/White 100% Tencel Chambray , which has a fun denim-look while being quite soft and flowy. When designing the top, I wanted to play with the stripes. I chos...

Made By A Fabricista: The Friday Pattern Company Westcliff Dress pattern

Have I just sewn my new favorite Maxi dress for the Fall? Friday Pattern Company patterns are one of my favorite to sew and wear.  I have fun sewing up their patterns and they turn out so beautifully. The Westcliff is a top and dress pattern for knit lovers. I love wearing knit but sewing knit is not my favorite. The pattern features: A faux-wrap bodice with full coverage and a neckline designed not to gape! Two cup size options (B and D cup) for better bust fit.  A flowy A-line skirt, with an optional lower tier to convert it into a maxi. The pattern is written for knits with at least ~25% stretch.  I selected a very soft jersey knit from Fabric Mart that has large scale flowers in brown and pink. The instructions are clear, there are many helpful tips for sewing knit included. The faux-wrap style is flattering and relatively easy to wear, especially in a comfortable stretchy knit. Overall, for knit garment sewing, thi...
