Made By A Fabricista: Sweater Weather

Sweater weather is officially here to stay! After experiencing a relatively warm early autumn in Pennsylvania, I wasn't sure it was going to get cold enough to wear sweaters every day, but it did! Since sweater weather seems to be sticking around, I decided to make my husband two new sweaters!

My husband is my behind-the-scenes cheerleader and sewing support. He is always willing to help me with photos of my makes, and he often gives me a second opinion when I get stuck in the creative process. To thank him for his support, I wanted to make him a couple of new cozy sweaters!

I found some really nice rayon polyester lycra brushed sweater knit fabrics on the Fabric Mart website that I knew he would love, so I let him pick which colors he preferred. He really liked the heathered shadow blue and the heathered bright gray colors, so we got them both! I also got a new pack of chrome ballpoint 80/12 Schmetz needles to make sewing these sweater knits a dream!

When my Fabric Mart order arrived, I was so happy with how soft and cozy the sweater knits were. They went above and beyond my expectations with their soft and cozy feel.

I used the Ellie and Mac Pullover Shawl-Collar Sweater pattern for the shadow blue sweater knit fabric. The pattern has a shawl collar and button which elevates it beyond just a standard sweater pattern. The fit of the pattern is a straight fit. Having made this pattern before, I knew that the sweater might end up being a little roomy on my husband in this weight and drape of sweater knit fabric. So, I went ahead and shaved about 1/2 inch off each side seam and sleeve to make the sweater a slimmer fit. I'm glad I removed that extra 1/2 inch on either side, because it made the sweater fit really well while still enabling him to wear an undershirt.

I paired the sweater with a beige and caramel colored button that I've had in my button box for years. I figured this would be the perfect button to contrast the shadow blue fabric and to pair nicely with khakis and my husband's favorite pair of cognac boat shoes.

Next, I wanted to make a classic crew neck sweater with the bright gray sweater knit fabric. My husband loves to layer long sleeved button downs under sweaters when the weather is chilly, making crew neck sweaters his go to.

There are so many men's raglan sleeved crew neck sweater patterns out there, but I decided early on that I didn't want to make him a raglan sleeved sweater. He tends to enjoy wearing classic set in sleeves, so that was what I looked for. I was happy when I found the Hainsville Hoodie from Rain City Patterns because it had everything I was looking for, plus tons of other options for future makes.

Sewing the Hainsville was very straight forward. If you've sewn a classic t-shirt before, it's the exact same process. I loved that the pattern had wristbands and a waistband because it made the whole assembly process super fast. Also, I loved that there was no hemming involved in the making of this sweater!

In the photos, my husband paired his gray Hainesville sweater with a pair of black jeans and a dark grey collared button down. He could also wear the sweater to work with black or dark gray dress pants to elevate it even more. With both of these sweaters in his closet now, he'll have plenty of cozy options to keep him warm throughout fall and winter!

If you have an opportunity to get some of this brushed sweater knit fabric, or something similar, you should seize the opportunity! You won't regret how soft, warm and cozy you'll feel while wearing this fabric!

  6. Congratulations, great Job! I have sewed multiple sweaters. They are fun to construct. But usually, I top stitch on my Baby lock, BUT always construct via serger. Lots of nice tricks with construction. Fabric Mart multiple great sweater knits! You produced 2 fabulous looking sweaters!

  7. Great needle type tip. These two colors look so good on your husband, especially the blue and I love the big button. The look good both with and without a shirt under them. I'm going to start thinking more about sweater knits for my husband as well as others.

Falling for Chiffon Again

Hello Sewing Friends! It’s Tira from Tira Cooks, and I finally made the perfect sundress too bad summer is almost over! This is my last sewing project of the summer season, and I chose a beautiful red-and-white print. The result is a lightweight, flowy dress that can easily transition from summer into fall and even winter with the right layers. This fabric was actually my second choice. I originally told myself, “You need a break from chiffon!” But here I am, sewing chiffon again. The crisp hems and sewing overall were surprisingly easy. The only reminder that I was working with chiffon fabric was all the fraying! Even better, this fabric is practically wrinkle resistant. I twisted, tied, and scrunched it, and it still came out looking beautiful with zero wrinkles. Because this was a border print, planning my layout before cutting was extremely important. I mapped out the pattern pieces first to make sure the print continued beautifully throughout the dress without breaking up the de...

Office Attire to Remember

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to contribute to Fabricista blog once more! I made another brand new cosplay: Reiko Kujirai from Kowloon Generic Romance! Kowloon Generic Romance is a sci-fi, romance & mystery manga series. It was later adapted to a TV anime and live action film! This series takes place in Kowloon Walled City. It’s about a woman named Reiko Kujirai who suffers from memory loss and doesn't remember her past. She works at a realty estate management company with her co-worker Hajime Kudou, a very easy going and brash man who’s also her crush! Reiko lives her life in Kowloon, while also trying to discover who she is, and the mysteries of this city (I will not spoil everything! You’re going to have to check it out for yourself!). I binged the anime in one day and really enjoyed it. The story and the characters are very intriguing. I love that the main characters are in their 30s, which is very rare in anime! After watching the anime, I knew that I had to cosplay Rei...

Sometimes You Have To Pivot

Hi Guys! I hope you all have been enjoying your summer so far. I know it’s coming to an end soon. So, this month I had decided to make this really cute ruffle top from Viki Sews and things just didn't work out as planned. I made a muslin out of the lining, and it fit great. I worked on that top, making ruffles, for two days. I decided to try it on for fit before installing the zipper and it didn’t fit! I was pretty bummed, but the show must go on. Luckly, I had enough fabric to make something else. I moved on to a button-down shirt pattern from Mood Fabrics. Did you know that Mood has a collection of free patterns? Well, they do and you should definitely check them out if you’re ok with PDF patterns.  I selected to make the Alabaster Sleeveless Blouse. I saw this top a few weeks ago when they released it and I knew I wanted to make it. My memade wardrobe is seriously lacking staples and I thought this top would be perfect to add to my rotation.  Based on my body measurements, ...

Return to work wardrobe in ITY – which is your favorite?

In June of this year, after spending nearly 11 years at my place of employment and after restructuring and cost cutting, I took a separation package. I was so fortunate to be able to take a few months off, and also to very quickly find a position with a new company. I start my new job on September 14th and I’m super excited!  This new position is also different for me in that it is local to my area (whereas before I worked remotely and traveled to the office every few weeks) – so I’ll be going into the office three times a week. So of course I needed to sew up some new outfits! I’m a huge fan of ITY knit fabric ; ITY stands for interlock twist yarn, which describes the way the yarn is knitted together. I love it for tops, dresses, skirts, and even pants: it’s comfortable, easy care, low wrinkle, and comes in so many beautiful prints. I sewed up three new outfits over the last two weeks and I’m excited to share them with you today! Oh, and also – I need help choosing what to wear fi...
