Made By A Fabricista: Special Grade Sorcerer… Miku Hatsune??

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to once again contribute to the Made by a Fabricista Blog! For this I made a new cosplay: Miku Hatsune from Vocaloid, but with a twist!

For those of you who don’t know, Miku Hatsune is a virtual idol from the Vocaloid series. Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesis software which uses voice banks from voice actors & singers. In this program people can make their own songs using these voices! There are so many characters in Vocaloid and Miku is the most popular one. She came out back in 2007 and is still going strong! She has so many songs and even does live concerts! She performed at Coachella one year and even opened for Lady Gaga at one of her concerts!  Miku has an iconic design, but she has so many others from her songs and the games! Fans have also made their own Miku designs. Some people incorporate their own culture, and some even based their designs on fast food places!

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of my favorite anime and manga series of all time. In this series curses have monstrous forms and are very dangerous! The protagonists fight these curses. They use curse techniques, weapons and attacks to fight and exercise curses. In this series the main protagonists are high school students, and attend Jujutsu High, where they’re trained to fight these curses and grow their techniques!

For this cosplay, I made what Miku’s outfit would be like if she was a character in Jujutsu Kaisen and a student. It’s Miku’s iconic design, but I changed the colors & added a few things! The students' uniforms are usually dark navy, but they’re allowed to customize them to however design they want!

Without further ado, let’s get started! The very first thing I worked on for this cosplay was the skirt! I used the Dark Navy Natural Crush Quilt Kona Cotton fabric!

I later cut a big strip of it & serged the edges to keep from fraying.

On Miku’s iconic design, she has a teal strip on the bottom of her skirt. For that I used the Teal Polyester Stretch Shirting fabric. I also saw this beautiful Teal Floral Weave Lace fabric on Fabric Mart’s site and wanted to use it! I overlaid the lace fabric over the shirting fabric. Then I cut smaller strips of both and sewed them together so it’s one piece.

The big navy strip and the small teal strip are sewn together & the bottom is hemmed.

I then made box pleats! The fabrics take the pleats so well! I pinned the pleats and then ironed them. Later after taking this photo, I sewed a basting stitch on top.

Then for a fun touch, I made the details on each of the pleats with heat transfer vinyl. These were ironed to all the pleats. They look so great on this fabric! Lastly for the skirt, I made the waist band and inserted elastic.

For the top, I made a mockup 1st and then transferred the pieces to the Midnight Navy Shirting fabric! I added fusible interfacing for a bit more strength, and later used my mockup pieces for the lining.

I took strips of the teal floral lace fabric, folded in half and gathered. Then I sandwiched the gathered teal lace pieces on the edges between the outer and lining fabrics, and sewed them all together. An invisible zipper is sewed to the front. I also made the collar out of the same midnight navy shirting fabric and gathered teal floral lace fabric. It’s sewed to the neck & I added a snap for the opening.

Lastly I hand sewed these buttons! These are replicas of the same buttons that the Jujutsu High students wear on their uniform!

Then there’s Miku’s iconic sleeves! I cut the sleeves out of the same dark navy kona cotton fabric, hemmed the bottom, and put them to the side. I then made the details out of heat transfer vinyl, ironed the details to the midnight navy shirting fabric & cut the rectangle shapes for both.

Then I added these details to the main sleeves, by doing applique! I added Heat and Bond Lite to the back of the 2 detail pieces, ironed them to the sleeve pieces, and satin stitched the edges in place. The ends of the sleeves are then sewed together & elastic is added on top. I then sewed more of the buttons on top for each.

I also made the neck tie out of the same teal shirting fabric and the teal lace. This was my 1st time making a neck tie out of scratch and it wasn’t too shabby! I then sewed my remaining buttons to the tie.

She also has a hanging lanyard on her skirt. I cut a strip of the teal shirting fabric and added interfacing on the back. I made the triangles out of the teal lace fabric & added to the strip by doing applique & satin stitching. I sewed the long ends of the strip together, turned inside out, and sewed the ends shut. Finally I sewed the ends of the lanyard to these swivel hooks.

After that I styled the wig and made the hair pieces and headphones out of EVA foam!

I had this Miku idea for a couple of years and I’m very happy with how this came out! Thank Fabric Mart for allowing me to bring this strange idea to life! Miku can now sing to her loving fans while also exorcising curses on the side!

  4. You did an amazing job bringing your vision to life! It takes an extra level of skill and creativity to make it happen with no pattern or road map. I appreciate how you explain the character first, to help us enjoy the ride with you. My fave picture is the last one, so much fun energy!

Made By A Fabricista: The Skirt that Brought my Sewjo Back

I know it can’t just be me. My sewjo has gone away and I’ve been having such a hard time trying to get it back. I remember the days when I used to sew every single day without fail and now, not so much. I think about sewing and all the things I’d love to make, but I just haven’t found the motivation. I kind of know what the issue is. I started a new job last October and ever since I started, I’ve been sewing less and less and I don’t like it! Well, in comes Simplicity S3237.  Summertime is here and it’s time to bring out all the skirts. Simplicity recently released S3237 as part of their summer patterns. This skirt is a full, gathered skirt with a bias-cut yoke with side seam pockets and an invisible back zipper. The skirt comes in 3 different lengths – mini, midi and maxi.  I decided to make View B which is the midi length. I’m not much of a maxi length kind of girl and that mini was a little too small for me. I sewed up a size 22 with a few modifications. Let’s talk about th...

Made By A Fabricista: Summery Stripes Set

Warm weather and linen go hand in hand! Our summer has been slow to show up with the heat, but bright, sunny afternoons have me all ready for light, swingy garments to stay cool. Wearing matching sets has been one way to make getting dressed easier when I hit decision fatigue since reaching for two items that already go together removes the need to plan or do any rearranging.  This is a lovely lighter-end-of-mid-weight linen in the most beautiful and subtle seaglass hues of grays and greens. This color combo strikes me as so calm and sophisticated, and a little stripe-play is perfect for details.  My tank pattern is the brand-spankin’ new Matchy Matchy Sewing Club Sunny Side Tank, just released this week. It’s a perfect little cropped A-line shape for wearing with high waisted pants or showing some midriff.  I made no changes to the extra small. The wide neckline is so elegant and this shape still gives full bra coverage to boot.  These really cute pants are the Mat...

Made By A Fabricista: The Ultimate Secret Maternity Dress

When you find the perfect summer dress pattern that also happens to be 100% bump-friendly, you don't just celebrate—you immediately plan to make it in every single color of the rainbow. At least, that’s the executive decision I made after sewing my first Tilly and the Buttons Mabel Dress for the Fabricista Blog. It all started with a classic late-night scroll on the Fabric Mart website, where I fell hard for a gorgeous midnight blue cotton lawn block print. I knew I wanted an easy-to-wear, breezy summer dress that could accommodate a growing bump, but I didn't want to buy a pattern I’d only wear for a few months. So, I turned to the internet.  After researching bump-friendly patterns, the Tilly and the Buttons Mabel kept popping up. Sewists everywhere were praising it for its ability to adapt to a changing body. Could it really live up to the hype?  Now that I’ve made one, I can confidently say: Yes. Absolutely. Here is what makes the Mabel so magical: ● The Silhouette: A...
