Made by a Fabricista: All White For Summer

 I hope you are well and enjoying the summer. A couple summers ago, I purchased a white linen maxi skirt.  It has the perfect fit, the perfect length, with one problem. The linen was so lightweight that you could see the outline of my thighs through it. The skirt didn't get as much wear as I expected. I decided to make a similar skirt in a thicker linen. Here is what I came up with:



It is a simple A-line maxi, made with a 100% medium weight linen fabric. Per the description of the fabric, it does not require a lining and gets softer with washes.  The skirt is unlined.



Here is a view of the back of the skirt. I drafted only two pattern pieces for this skirt, one is the skirt pattern, from which the front and the back are cut, and the second pattern piece is the facing, from which the front and back facing are cut. There are no darts. 



Skirts are the most basic of garments when it comes to pattern making. I studied pattern making with Suzy Furrer at Apparel Arts. She offers several pattern making classes online now.  I highly recommend her Skirt Drafting Class if you are interested in pattern making.



Here is the view from the side. I have an invisible zipper on the left side. Can you see it? No? Because it's invisible :) This might the 1st time I got a flawless invisible zipper installed, thanks for my new industrial machine. 



I paired this maxi with a simple white scoop neck tee that has golden exposed zippers on the shoulders..



As for accessories,  a simple summer hat does the trick!



Now that I am all moved into my new sewing studio, I am looking forward to a lot of sewing. All I want to do is enjoy life and create beautiful things! I hope you are well, and I will see you soon with a special summer tank top hack! Take care!

    So boho! I'm thinking that you're the only person that can make a white maxi skirt look so exotic! I love the maxi and that is a super cute top with those exposed zips.

How are the temps still so hot?! Fall + Flannel = Shacket

Sewing With Intention: New Look 6106 and a More Coordinated Wardrobe

Sometimes a sewing project begins with a beautiful piece of fabric or a pattern you just have to make. This one began with my closet. Recently, I did a major closet purge. I took a good look at what I actually wear, what I kept reaching for, and—maybe more importantly—what was missing. Once the pieces I no longer loved or wore were gone, something became very clear: I want to be more intentional about what I sew next. Instead of sewing individual pieces that I love but don't necessarily wear together, I want to build a wardrobe where my handmade garments coordinate with the clothes I already own—and with the pieces I'm planning to sew next. Two fantastic linen dresses, without breaking the bank!

 Dory's Make: If you are thinking of going on a vacation, let’s say Italy or France, this would be a wonderful dress to take along. Dory used Simplicity 0330/1810  (a 2012 pattern) and a beautiful 55% linen 45% rayon fabric to create a very comfortable cornflower blue floral dress.  The Fabric Mart fabric was easy to work with. It does have a slight slub to the fabric and tends to ravel.  Easy to fix with either overlocking the edges or using a french seam.   This dress has pleats in the bodice and pleats in the sleeves as well as two darts in the back where you stitch your belt into.  It’s not a difficult make.  There are no buttons or zippers.  The V neck is a perfect length, not too low or too high.  I love this fabric and hope to make some other clothes out of the same kind!  Dee's Make: A woven linen and rayon blend from Fabric Mart fabrics makes for an easy-to-wear, comfortable, colorful fall dress!     Simplicity 88...
